This weight loss thing sucks. I just tried on a pair of shorts from last year that were a tiny big snug then and now....geez! OMG I have to lose this weight! IT's driving me nuts! I changed my workout routine (cardio - running/elliptical - 3 days per week; buns tape - which includes weights for arms and ab work - 2 days per week. 2 days off.). I have also changed my diet - no soda or chocolate, lots of fruits and veggies, 5-6 small meals per day.

Since I changed all that, I feel fatter, my clothes don't look as good and I weigh more. WTH is going on???? I'm obviously doing something wrong. What is it? I'm thinking I should go back to my previous workout (running 5 days per week) and stick to my new diet. I'm just so pissed at my body and frustrated beyond words. There's got to be SOMETHING I can do!!! HELP!!

Are you staying below your daily calorie needs?

:)

you havent been doing this for long, its not going to happen in anything like the short term future so calm down!

make sure you're eating enough (dont fall below your minimum kcalories), dont be undereating as you will be storing everything you eat instead of burning it off. its natural to weigh more the more you work out, you should be creating muscle and losing fat - since muscle weighs more than fat you will also increase in weight.

Personally id ditch the tape - the arm and ab work will doubtlessly be insufficient and also no-one ever works as hard as they should whilst in front of the tele.

Finally, stop trying to get to your perfect image that you see in the mirror. you will only get frustrated. concentrate on running quicker, faster or moving more weight - then you will start seeing the results you so desperately want.

Same thing here. I was losing weight, but joined a gym two./three weeks ago - and my progress has come to a hault. Maybe the body has to adjust. I heard that this kind of thing happens. And, it's good to change your work out every 4 to 6 weeks, so you did good. We just need to give it some more time. BTW, doing those tapes is better than nothing.

I'm not sure if I am above below or right at my caloric needs. I went to that website and it said I needed 2023 cals per day. WHAT?!?! HOLY COW!!! I don't count calories, but I can't imagine I go above that. Below perhaps. Then again, when u count cals u tend to see things u didnt' before, including how many cals u take in. Ugh. I'm just so frustrated.
As far as the tape thing, it's the only way I can get my weight-training in. I dotn' know how to do them and I know it's not much, but it IS working the back of my legs and inner thighs and arms. My butt....not so sure, but hey, every little bit helps, right?
I have been on this new routine for almost a month and damn if I Can't see any results. my hubby swears certain parts of me are thinner, but it's my abs, hips, belly are that gets me. And those damned shorts....it was the thighs!!! THE THIGHS!!! How the hell could they have gotten bigger!! Ugh. I'm just so....well, you know. Ugh. Thanks for listening to me vent.

Anyone in the state of maine want to come train me? :(

the shorts thing may be you imagining something completely different to the reality, so i wouldnt be using it as a serious guide.

as far as the video goes, take some basics from it, add some things you'll learn from here

http://www.exrx.net/

and get yourself a decent program, people on here will adapt it for you so you're not wasting your time. if you throw in several challenging compound moves you'll get better results quicker.

if your husbands says certain things are thinner, they probably are!! there is a slight chance he's being honest you know!

WOW...That site is AWESOME! Just wish I had equipment to do the excercises.....anyone have any suggestions on what I can use in lieu of machines at home so I can do some of the excercises?? I bought 3-lb dumbbells, I'm thinking of getting a cord - not sure what u call it....has triangular handles....is there anything else I should get?

Wendy,

Ditch the tape... get a great strength training routine. The calories per day calculator is a good estimate of what you should eat to maintain your current weight. Drop that number by 250-500 for weight loss.

Nothing is going to change unless you lift heavier weights. Sorry to say :( 3 pounds weights are not doing a darn thing for you. The secret to fat loss is no secret... a great cardio program, a great strength routine, rest, and a clean eating program. That's it.

How do I get a "great strength routine" going if I dotn' have any weights (other than the 3lbs bumbbells) and don't have a clue as to what I am doing?

If this is what you truly want in life, to shape up, then you will find a way to get a gym membership. It is pricey for some people's budgets, but well worth it! Maybe you have to give up on some leisure costs for a while, so you can afford the gym?

But, the gym is where you are going to have access to all the weights and equipment you need.

I pay 42 bucks per month. That is roughly $1.40 per day. I have to laugh when I see that number, because it is so unbelievably worth it! What a freaking bargain.

Get yourself into a gym.

$42 per month!!!! HOLY COW!!! I can't afford that. Of course, u also live in another state. I will have to look around here for a good gym.....

Hey Wendy,

I'm really new to strength training and I only had 3lb weights and it really wasn't doing anything for me.
Lynn is so right you need heavier weights, bite the bullet and invest in some heavier dumbells.
I work out at home and have bought the following
3/8/10 lb dumbells
1 Stability ball
2 resitance bands
1 bar with 30lbs
1 medicine ball
1 Weight training DVD

You can probably buy this stuff second hand from e-bay.

Also I recently bought the Melt the fat e-book that Trainer Lynn sells. I'm still getting to grips with it but it's great value for money. It shows strength training exercises for all body parts.

I know it can be really daunting working out at home not having the knowledge or experience but there are some great threads on this website which will point you in the right direction.:)

Many have said the same thing to me, but when you look at their budgets, they spend money on crap compared to a gym membership. What do you need more, a weekend meal at a restaurant or improving your health significantly.

I am generalizing here, not talking specifically to your situation, b/c I don't know your exact situation. But I find many people really can afford it if they shift around some budgeting.

If not, try and find used weights for your basement. I know around here, people are always selling them at local yard sales and the like. I also heard that always has used gym equipment that some people actually give away.

Just some thoughts. I really wish you luck! :)

I wrote an article once about people's perceived notions of my training shedule. People think that because I am a trainer I use all this fancy stuff. I have to laugh.

I workout at home. All by myself. With a stability ball and free weights. That's it. My motto in life and on this board has always been the same- keep it simple.

It's not hard. It's not confusing. Wendy, I've replied to your other posts. I've posted the 5 tips to fat loss several times on this board. Have you read them? If not, try doing a search for it. It may help you clear the confusion.

Hey Lynn...

Just visited ur site and once again reminded myself of the 5 Rules. I plan on getting some weight training in this afternoon. I will also try doing some cardio, since today was supposedly my day off from cardio so I skipped this morning. How long do you strength train? (i.e. how long are your ST sessions?) I printed out some of the exercises from ur website, so I will use those for guidance. Let's see if I can get this thing rolling! Thanks all of you for your help!

Weight training is the important variable, it really does not matter where you do it, home or gym. Some prefer one over the other, but if you do it right, the results will be the same.

If you are going to train at home however, you are going to have to pick up some more equipement. If anything, get yourself a set of adjustable weight dumbbells. 3 lb dumbbells like the ones you currently own are not going to help you much.

Can you give me some ideas on what I should buy? I know someone else posted some things, and those I think I can pick up. I do have a stability ball. Haven't used it in a couple of months. I did see some machine in my fitness mag that does all the lower leg excercises that I want. I wonder how much it costs though...kinda makes me wonder....

Hey Wendie, don't get discouraged. Trainer Lynn, stroutman and wannabe are right, you HAVE to up your weights. When I started at home right after I had my baby I was running 5 days a week and using heavier weights (heavier than 3 pounds) a big burger, fries and a coke probably weigh that much!

You need to get some 10, 12, 15 pounders. Your legs can withstand more than you think, but of course start out slow.

And stroutman is right about the gym, most memberships you can get for around $1 per day. My membership started at $35 and now I only pay my dues which are $11. Get rid of your cable or degrade to basic service or stop renting movies on the weekends...you can do it!

I have to play devil's advocate to the gym membership posts. While many basic gym memberships are around $1.00/day, and that sounds affordable or possible to work into any budget there are often other things to consider. For example, if you have children you most likely need to add child care to the cost of the membership. This can make a membership quickly double or tripple the monthly cost. It may very well be possible however, to squeeze a little money out of the budget to get some better free weights, adding more and heavier weights as you progress. Used exercise equipment is cheap and copious at garage sales as many people make impulse buys and never use the equipment. If you have the equipment at home it is possible to work in 10 minutes here and there through out the day while chasing kids instead of deciding at the end of the day that you are too tired to go to the gym. For me, a gym was added stress and something else to feel guilty about. Working out at home gave me the flexibility to get things done.
