Which way would be faster?

If a person were to eat only a few hundred calories a day, would they lose weight faster than a person who eats around 1000 calories?

no one should be eating that little of calories (ok, maybe there is some rare exception)...2000 is more around the right amount.

I am no expert, but eating too few calories puts your body into "starvation mode" and it will start storing every single calorie it gets...especially fat.

not too mention you will have no energy to exercise whatsoever.

So basically, if you eat a few hundred pounds, yes, you will lose weight in a very unhealthy weight...and once you get to your "desired" level, and realize you need to be eating more in order to have any energy, you will sky rocket back up, and probably end up weighing more than you did before/

It is very important to eat enough calories. Anything less than 1200 is very bad. DO NOT eat less than 1200 calories a day. To know how many calories you need check several online calculators. They take into account age, height, weight and activity level. The amount needed to lose weight and stay healthy varies from person to person. It is not usually healthy to lose more than 2 pounds per week.

To answer your question the person eating a few hundred calories would not only lose weight but win a free trip to the hospital. Their 1000 calorie friend would probably be coming soon after. As others said eating that low of calories is bad for you. Here is what usually helps someone change there mind about eating less.

-You will gain weight back even more when you give in to eat, and your body will force you to do this through physical and mental effects because of nutrition.
-You will get stuck in a plateau and lose almost all your muscle as well as your body will hold on to as much fat as it can therefore making the "skinny" fat look.
-Your skin, health and hair will suffer from lack of nutients.

so eat, and eat well.

Aim for something more like 1700-1800 calories per day, taken in five or six small meals.

As opposed to starving your body, by eating every three or so hours you will maintain a steady and constantly working metabolism.

Oh, and you'll avoid malnutrition and starvation. Which is nice :D

low cals

My wife did the whole 750 calories a-day thingy before we met. She went from 167 pounds to 115 pounds in 3 months. She was all happy at how nice she looked until her body said "enough", and started shutting down. She was constantly sick and weak.

When she went back to eating like a normal human (which you ultimately will have to do or die) she gained 15 pounds in 1 month. She was instantly back on her way up to the dreaded 160's. She started to panic until I got her into a regular fitness program.

A diet with such little calories per day will create all kinds of havoc on your body. Don't get fooled into thinking that eating less is the key to loose weight. Look at all the threads on this forum that say you have to eat more to loose weight, not less. ;)

I definately agree. Eating less than 1000 calories is setting yourself up for ultimate failure. Beleive me I was scared of that number. I did less than 600 cals a day was my 'plan' and then it got less and less thinking I was doing good , my relationships started falling apart , my body started getting weak, I almost lost my job, my kids were bored with their mother's preoccupation, and I thought about food all day long instead of just eating it and getting on with my life !

Life isn't all about losing weight so don't make it that way, you can be happy and lose at the same time by taking it SLOWER .

Molly,
I get where you are in your situation because I've been exactly where you are before. Believe me though, these posts are right on the money. eating that little will cause your body to hoard food, turn it to fat and slow your metabolism even further. you will get increasingly irritable, sad and lonely as you feel trapped in the cycle. I can see you are beginning to take baby steps in the right direction and I'm proud of you! I won't lie and say its easy or it will be fast. It is a LONG road and you have to be ready for it. It has been 15 years since my ED and I am just now seeing the light. I have been in "starvation mode" for years and able to survive on the hundreds that you speak of without losing weight and even gaining if I ate anything "normal". THATS how low my metabolism was. I was maintaining on 600 cals! Kiddo I would recommend that if you are ready to break free from this ED that you make up your mind to do it 100%. It won't work if you say you'll "try" it or "work" on it. Because anorexia has a way of overpowering that kind of wishy washiness. Are you seeing a nutritionist or anyone professional? If you don't know where to start. Start simple. Get a journal devoted to meals and vow to eat every 3 hours whether you like it or not. Start slow. I know you are at very low cals right now so starting like the following might be helpful:
breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal or 1/2 cup cereal and 1 egg or 2 egg whites
snack: small yogurt
lunch: 1/2 sandwich with meat inside, small fruit
snack: cottage cheese with some berries or fruit
dinner: a lean meat like chicken and some rice
snack: small yogurt (or cottage cheese) and some cereal on top

although thats still very low in cals its better than where you are and keeps your body fueled and burning. try hard to get one protein and one carb each time you eat. Like me, you will have to increase calories very slowly as your body adjusts. I started at 600 and now I'm at 1300 and haven't gained a thing and have lost body fat. I would NEVER have believe eating more would get me the results I have always been looking for and I am never hungry. hunger used to be a feeling I loved. I understand that too...but since giving my body what its cried out for for so long it works WITH me instead of against me.

I hope any of this was helpful

As said above, a few hundred calories/day will only hurt you in the end and also make you look VERY unhealthy.

What kind of weight is the question.. You would likely not have enough energy to do cardio, so your body would break down muscle like MAD..
And after all of your internal organs shut down eventually you would probably die. I hope this is a purely hypothetical thing. Starving ones self is NOT a cool way to lose weight. Unless you want to look and feel like sh*t.. anything below 1500 cals throughout a day is probably too little.

very true when i graduated highschool and went onto my first year of college, i was only consuming around 600-800 calories a day, pretty soon i began to get major headaches all the time, i was always tired, not to mention i looked like death, everyone around me was telling me i dont look good, but i couldnt even see that. now that i look at pictures i see how aweful i looked. i think if u are a thin person and ur metabolism works well you should eat around 1800 cals a day?
