Neck Pain During Floor Ab Work

Any advice on how to deal with/reduce neck pain during sit ups and floor ab work? I've tried looking at my stomach while doing the exercises, looking at the ceiling, different advice and still have pain/tension in my neck. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this just normal and will reduce as my strength increases?

mmm, my only suggestion would be to try to keep an imaginary apple between your neck and your collar bone and try to keep the neck as straight as possible, without pulling on your neck with your arms...

Get a stability ball and do the crunches on that. Floor crunches are almost always done wrong. However if you cannot get/afford a ball, place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, pull your belly button into your spine, look at the ceiling, keep looking at the ceiling, and simply lift your shoulder off the ground (head not moving forward, but oving up towards ceiling).

If you have neck pain... I'd stop. Try reverese crunches or Plank pose, hanging leg raise... something that works the abs without neck pain. Get a ball though :) They're fun.

sit ups aren't great for abs anyways...most people use the hip flexors for that move.

crunches, reverse crunches, side raises for obliques, and some hanging leg raises if you have access to the equipment.

in my ab class, out instructor told us to put our hands to the sides of our heads. Not gripping at all, just fingertips barely touching. Then, keep your elbows back! your head and elbows should be even, and then, like you said, obviously dont curl in your chin.

I also agree with Lynn, balls are really fun, and you can get different exercises out of them, they are really not too expensive.
