Bodyweight vs Free Weights

I'm new to the forum and just getting back to exercise after a long time. I need to lose a considerable amount of weight.

I used to lift weights like a fiend and am still quite strong. When I started to exercise again, i went back to the old weights and cardio but I found weights to be tough on my joints.

I started doing strictly body weight exercises and I'm hooked.

I've found some great resources on the web. Many are from wrestler's and martial artist types who promote functional fitness and not just pure strength training.

Are there any other people here who are interested in this type of work out that want to start a conversation

This is a great workout from one of the best trainers out there, Alwyn Cosgrove.

Weight is weight

Skull Pilot,

Great to see you back in the fitness game. I will tell you that I have been doing bodywieght exercises for the last 2 years and it has repaired by knees and back. Did not help my hurt shoulder, I had to go to kettlebells for that. Working like a champ.

I am sure you have seen Fury's website - I really like the Royal Court, but had to stop the bridge until I fixed my shoulder (it was pulling my neck out of alignment during the bridge so I was not getting the full benefit.)

You might also try this one: The Naked Warrior by Pavel.

That book will tell you that whether you use weights or your own weight, strength is strenth. Bodyweight is more convienent and safer that "bodybuilding" but not necessarily safer that the powerlifting style of kettlebells or olympic lifts.

One thing I noticed, however, is that after a few months of the hindu push-up, I added about 50 yds to my drive. Finally beat my dad after all these years.

What problems were you having with your shoulder and how did you correct that? I've dislocated my right one twice, and I've been told that I can do exercises to protect it partially and/or get surgery on it.

The main reason I made the switch to BW workouts was that the bench press was hurting my shoulders not to mention my wrists and elbows.

Fury was my first exposure to the BW only mentality and I use his royal court. I just found a book called Never Gymless by Ross Enamait

This guy is amazing.

I've been doing pyramid workouts with 3 moves

Squat
Push up (hindu, military, etc I switch them around)
Pull up ( usually some cheat variation like body rows or feet on the floor on a low bar to build up to the free hanging pullup)

A set is 1 squat, 1 push up, 1 pull up, then 2 of each , 3 of each etc
up to 10 then back down to 1. That adds up to 100 of each. It's a pretty good work out. I just started doubling the squats so I'm up to 2oo per workout.

Do you guys have any routines that you like.
