Tricep Strengthening

Howdy everybody,
I was just curious if it is possible to isolate each head of the tricep with a specific hand hold or motion? Is there a way to work more the medial head than the others?

Thanks,

Les

nope. we say the triceps have several heads, but really its one muscle. the quadraceps do have multiple heads you can hit from different angles.

my suggestion to you is make sure you have a varied tricep routine that has pressing moves, like close grip bench presses, and extension moves, like skull crushers, pressdowns, etc.

only move I would completely avoid is tricep kickbacks. they just aren't efficient.

Thanks Malkore,
I'm a PTA and I didn't think you could really hit one of the sections by using a different hand hold, somebody just told me you could but it didn't sound right.

The kickback would be the one where you are bent over at the waist and lifting the arm back behind you?

Thanks again, it'll come in handy.

Les

yeah, the kick back is what you described. it really works the triceps the same as a cable pressdown, or skullcrushers...except you tend to not be able to use nearly as much weight since the deltoids have to hold the upper arm in place.

thus you see people doing 20 reps of kickbacks with 10-15lbs. this is great if you're trying to train for endurance, and not size or strength.

some misguided people think you can 'tone' the muscle with an ass load of reps and light weights. toning has nothign to do with rep schemes, and everything to do with shedding body fat, and building up your muscles so they are more clearly defined.

I'm a PTA and one of my patients was told he has a medial triceps head tear. He's not sure if it's a complete tear or partial but he has been having trouble building his triceps in that area and he just asked if it was possible to work only the medial head.

Somebody said you could by simply using a different hand hold but it didn't seem quite right.

Why not?

Good place to find good advice and learn new things. Something I hear somewhere may be different than what others may have experience with.

Just because you are experienced with origins and insertions or are familiar with protocols for TKA's or total shoulders doesn't necessarily mean you don't have anything else to learn.

Always expanding your horizons isn't a bad thing is it? I believe I have seen a PT making posts to this forum, perhaps more on the answering end than on the asking but still visiting an internet forum.

Besides it's fun to mess around and see what all is out there.

Les

^^Very true, there is always someone out there who has forgotten more than we'll ever know.. Kinda makes you wanna learn everything. Welcome to the boards since I didn't see an intro thread..

I didn't post an intro. Sorry. Didn't realize I was supposed to. Nothin' special to introduce anyway, just little ol' me.

I thought you were trying to prescribe something to a patient, through annonymous strangers, sorry.

No big. I just wanted to make sure I was giving relevant information is all. What better place to find out about building muscles than on a fitness forum? Lots of really good information here and it just gives me more to go on and make sure my patients are getting quality care that is accurate. I'm pretty new anyway, graduated December 13th, '05 so I still figure I have a lot to learn.

Thanks,

Les

Les,

Just be aware that on an internet forum, it can be hard to tell good info from bad.
I'm not a personal trainer, or a nutritionist. for that matter, my B.A. is in English with a minor in philosophy!

While I have no formal training, I do read a LOT, bounce ideas off others, experiment with my own body...

and I stay at a lot of Holiday Inn Express's ;)

that sound great malkore

Isn't it amazing what those Holiday Inn Express places can do for people??? I mean, have you seen the stuff on tv about those things?? Man! They like know everything about bears and skydiving and sharks, they're champions on Jeopardy!! I didn't realize I was in such good hands!! :)

I know what you're saying though Malkore, this is just one of many places I look for my information. And it's nice to have places where people are happy to help you out with what they know and if they aren't sure they tell you and are even nice enough to tell you to be sure to check other places to make sure you're getting good information.

Thanks a ton for the help.

Les
