Carido and str training..

Im on the bill star 5x5 program, just started.
im just wondering if i do cardio on my rest days, if that will interfere with the whole rest thing and mess up the program?
cardio i do is jogging, bisycling and sometimes skiing.
i just dont want it to interfere too much with my muscles resting and recovering from the workout i have had the day before and therefor have a negative effect on the workout i will have tomorrow.

do you know what interval training is?
post back if you need help understanding.

basicaly when you run for hours on end your breaking down your muscles to use them as fuel. this happenes when you have burned off all the fuel in your muscles and blood stream.

the idea of interval training is that you stop before you start to break down your muscles, so you run as fast as you can for as long as you can then walk at a moderate pace (usually uphill) for a rest then go again.

everyones fittness is diffrent, but on average you may be looking at running fast (i.e. as fast as you can, really really flat out sprinting) for 2mins then walking for 2mins, keep doing this and after 17mins do a slow walk to cool down for 3mins.

may not sound a lot but even long distance runners have probs when they start this. even 20mins can be really tuff. But its all up to you, only you can tell how hard your pushing yourself.

hope that helps

yes i know about interval training. but i was thinking more of the muscle work, you know, the muscles work when you run/jogg and the whole ideal that you shouldnt work out the same muscle group 2 days in a row.

i doubt i could run as fast as i can for 2min actually:p i can probobly run pretty fast for 2 mins, but i have this "uniqe" ability that when i push myself to the max, i can take out all my energy in like half a minnute maybe :p

though, when doing that short intervals, dont you just get good at running short intervals then? and will have troubble if you are supposed to run like 5km?

ohh,. and do the intervals really matter how long they are? if i just run as fast as i can until i cant do it anymore, then walk until i feel up for it. or do i have to time it and all?:p

you use different fibers i believe. fast twitch and slow twitch , so i think that its just fine to do both just do cardio after weights :)

yeah, i do them on different days;) though, when i lift i try to lift fast, using as much power as i can, not only enough to lift the weight, as i was told it was smart do to so, but when i lift heavy, it goes pretty slow nomatter what you do:p

and what about if i bicycle home from the gym (after i have worked out all of my body), theres two pretty long hills i have to climb, which i feel quite hard on my tighs, could that mess up the str training i have or is it something completley different?

Yeah you just run untill you can run no more, depending on your fitness level. if your new to fitness training then you may wanna take it slow or you can pass out. but if you know your limets then you can push yourself.

"when doing that short intervals, dont you just get good at running short intervals then? and will have troubble if you are supposed to run like 5km?"

sort of, basicaly... you gotta weigh up your goals. if you wanna get big and bulked out, you need to run to burn off all the extra fat your putting on, but then you dont wanna start burning the muscle as well.

if you wanna run 5k then thats what you train.

if your unfit then short intervals will help you in everytthing, but if your good at long distance and you stop doing it then yeah, your gonna lose the ability to run long distance. But if you wanna get big its short intervals, if you wanna run long distance then you wont get big.

I run on days I work my legs to deal with that, but I sprint.. so that's a little different.

Without knowing how the cardio is effecting your legs, it's hard to guess what you should be doing.

I think you just have to feel it. Are your legs sore after cardio? Are they still sore when you get back to a leg workout? Your body should be able to tell you what you need to know.

Thats interesting cos I run everyday, but not on the day I work my legs or the next day after that.

so Muck's way works for him and my way works for me, so there you go, its always good to get the blood pumping and take a run whenever you can.

thanks for the replies guys :)
doesnt the muscle use different fibers when doing str training and high rep training? as i would assume running would fit under?
