weights and gaining weight

I am posting this question for my dad...He is 46 5'10 200 lb's. When he lifts weights he will gain weight. When i say lift weights i mean throw around weights for maybe 15 to 20 mins 3 times a week. The other days he walks on a treadmill for 40 mins. If he doesn't do any of this he starts to drop weight..( while eating sweets at night)...?? I know that muscle can add weight, but there is no way his little bit of lifting can put on 2 pounds in a day. Any ideas on why exercise has the opposite effect on him?

I seriously doubt he gains 2 pounds of muscle from a few workouts. He must be eating more when he trains.

Most people need to do both - cardio and weigth training to achieve good body composition.

I have seen this happen in my years as a personal trainer. Typically, this happens when you have an individual that has never worked out and begins weight-training. The nervous sytem adapts very quickly to the demands put on it. So muscel become stronger--quicker--and get bigger. Also, his snacking on sweets is probably enough to satisfy his caloric needs, (believe it or not).

This is SHORT TERM. His body will begin to adapt to the neurological demands and will stop responding unless he changes something.
