Wondering about protein shakes or extra things to take after workouts...

I've heard friends talk about using Creatine after working out to build muscle, and I've heard that protein shakes are really good to take after working out to help your muscles repair themselves and to help with soreness. Can anyone recommend anything? I'm not looking to build muscle, but wanting to lose some weight and tone up. Thanks!

Steve are you saying he doesnt need them because he still wants to lose weight and should be in a calorie deficit? I know you cant add muscle (at least in most cases) during a deficit and your main goal is to maintain the muscle while losing fat. Or are you saying protein shakes and creatine isnt worth it? Just curious?

Protein shakes are worth it if you have trouble getting adequate protein in throughout the day, which quite a few seem to. Including me at times. Besides that, you can just as easily get adequate protein from whole foods.

There's nothing magic about protein powder.

Creatine is a viable supp. But I wouldn't suggest a novice start taking creatine before they dial in all the other fundamental things like proper diet and exercise programming.

To boot, even given creatine's efficacy, it's not something I use personally. ROI isn't high enough in my mind... but there are a number of people who would disagree and some benefit more from it than others based on variable basal levels of creatine in the body, naturally.

I just wasn't too sure about many of the supplemental products out there. I know they help some people, while they hurt others. I know that I don't eat adequately, but that's mostly due to being a broke, single mom...tho it doesn't help that I'm an extremely picky eater. I have a few back and neck problems, and even low impact tends to put me in extreme pain for at least the first week. I'm trying to start out slow, but it's kind of hard to when I feel like I haven't done much of a workout, only to be close to bedridden the next day. I have liquid vitamins that I like, but I can't stay on any kind of schedule or routine to save my life, which includes remembering to take vitamins and such. Routine is definitely one of the biggest issues I'm trying to iron out right now. I just wasn't sure how effective protein shakes or some other type of supplement might help with my back and muscles....

Well here's some bluntess...

You either want this or you don't. If you dig deep and think of all the reasons you want this and still can't seem to mustard up consistency... I can think of three things:

1) you haven't thought hard enough about what you want

2) you don't want it as bad as you think you do

3) when you do try you try to hard and burn yourself out too quickly

I could think of some more but you get the point. I'll tell you this flat out, I'd rid yourself of worrying about supplements. That is, by far and away, not what you need right now.

Do you have health insurance? If so, would it cover a visit to a physio or a chiro to find out what's wrong with your back and potentially fix the problem?

No, I don't have insurance, but I need it badly. I've been to chiropractor's before, and by the gods I miss it! As far as my back goes, my right hip shifted up and back from where it's supposed to be after a car accident, and that in turn messed up my sacro illiac. My last vertebrae is also sliding forward, tho not sure how much of a difference that makes. As for my neck, it's curved the wrong way (also from the accident), and one of those vertebrae is shifted about a half inch to the left, so I get major migranes. Add that to depression and possibly bi-polar disorder, and I'm all over the place...

Yea, that's a tough place to be without insurance. Those kinds of injuries really need professional guidance.

What do these workouts look like that leave you debilitate the next day. Maybe we can start with that?

Also, regardless of injury, you still can and should buckle down on your diet if you're serious about this. Actually more so since your exercise isn't optimal.

Yeah, professional help would be nice, especially if I had a personal trainer. I was doing Yoga Booty Ballet for awhile, and I just kept working thru the pain because it's something I needed to do, but could never find anything that would keep me from hurting. I also used to do yoga, but the tapes I have still hurt. I just got a core ball, so I wanna try that stuff out and see if it kills my back as much as everything else. My back will never stop hurting, and I just have to try to work thru it...even if it means crying in pain the next day. I don't want to be overweight, and according to my current BMI, I'm getting kinda close. My mom may help me get caught up on bills, and if she does, I might be able to stay on top of everything. As long as I can get to that point, I'll be able to actually buy the food that I should be eating. I just don't eat much right now. My work has a snack bar for customers, and I'll usually grab a Quaker cereal bar in the morning, a bag of pretzels and a chewy granola bar in the afternoon. I get home, and while my bf was there, he'd usually dinner ready for us. Since he hasn't been there, I haven't been doing much of anything, including eating...
