Why Am I Gaining Weight?

I am 20 days into my new exercise routine. There's been little change to my diet (it is slightly better but mostly the same), but I am gaining weight (5 pounds) since I started working out. My body does feel firmer and more toned, but I went into this with a goal to lose ten pounds.

So, I guess my question is, do I need to go on a diet? I feel my eating is pretty healthy to begin with. Also, my exercise routine consists mainly of yoga, with some light cardio and weight training mixed in.

Any advice?

Oh, and I am 5'4 (female), 130 pounds.

5 lbs isn't anything to sweat.

You need to start concerning yourself with body composition rather than what the scale is telling you.

It could be any number of things such as fluid retention, glycogen, etc.

But who cares?

This is about being healthy and looking better at whatever number the scale spits out.

Oh, and if the trend continues upward, b/c this is what you should concern yourself with, the long term trends... then you need to start thinking about what's wrong with your nutrition.

Thanks Steve. You're right... I just really want to fit back into my "skinny jeans". I guess the only thing to do is keep on focusing on eating right and exercising, and it will have to happen sooner or later (hopefully sooner).

It could be that you're gaining some muscle from the increase in activity above and beyond what your body is used to. That's one way it adapts, especially when you're doing a bit of weight training.

However, being a dieting female, that's not something you should expect very long.

That's why I said, if the trend doesn't change over the next few weeks... come back here and we'll troubleshoot ya.

Pic for ya....

5 lbs of something is 5 lbs of something regardless of what said something is.

People get confused by the fact that muscle is much more dense than fat.

I changed my workout routine to include more cardio, and started tracking my calories... weight is (slowly) coming off now.

Oh, and I quit soda!!!

Congrats on quitting the soda...that's one of the things I ditched when I realized how many empty calories and how much sugar I was consuming. I prefer, these days, to fill my calorie needs with real food, more than the "cravings" that provide nothing...

We just call it pop up here. but good job on cutting it out. it's the little changes like that, that can make a big difference. some people dont even consider that they're drinking calories too. A can of pop might as well be liquified cake IMO :biggrinjester: and needs to be in moderation like it too... keep it up and remember this isn't just a change for now, it's a change for life :)

No you don't need to go on a diet but you certainly need to alter the one your on right now if you don't see weight loss that you are expecting. Nutrition is 90 percent of the process. It comes first then comes exercise.
