When you injure yourself...what next

On Thursday my workout partner and I hit the gym. He pushed me to lift what I thought was too much weight. I don't have a lot of upper-body strength.

I did 20 reps of alternating bicep curls with 5lb weights, then switched to 8lbs for the last 10. I then did 30 reps with a 20lb barbell and worked on my triceps with the same weight.

Starting yesterday, my left shoulder started to ache. Now it's killing me and I can't lift my left arm above shoulder level without feeling a sharp pain in my shoulder. I don't think it's the joint; it feels like muscle pain.

When people here take it too far and hurt themselves like that, what do y'all do? Just ease off that body part until it stops hurting, or push through the pain? Also, how long should I expect this to take to heal before getting concerned? If I'd torn a muscle, wouldn't it hurt a lot more? Right now it's just a slight dull ache but it really hurts if I lift my left arm over my head. My right arm is fine.

Maybe I need to work on form. I hear form is very important with free weights and it's easy to hurt yourself with them. Have people here found that to be the case?

Form is extremely important with free weights or machines... and you absolutely should not move to a higher weight unless you are darn certain your form is correct...

I wouldnt push thru the pain, that can only make things worse.. wait til you recover, and if it's not better in a day or so - go to a doctor.. (sports medicine doctors should be able to tell you what's up with your shoulder) or search this forum for ART Chiropractors - that might also be a solution... you'll get more information.

Yesterday when I went to the gym I avoided the weights entirely and did nothing but treadmill and elliptical for almost 45 minutes. I used an elliptical that doesn't have the poles that go back and forth.

It's my left shoulder that hurts and I tend to sleep on my left side which probably doesn't help. It hurts a little less than it did yesterday but not much.

I'm reluctant to use the PTs at my gym because I don't know how well qualified they are. I suppose I could ask, but they're going to tell me what they think I need to hear in order to sell the service; it's something like $100.
