Urgent Help Required

Ok i'm new here, I just signed up to get some advice the site looks cool and you people here seem cool aswell, also dont worry about my name, I forgot that it was 2007 and made it 2006, oh well :D.

Ok, i'm 18 and about 9 stone and 6' tall, which in other words im really skinny and under weight for my age. Everytime I go out I get commented on about how skinny I am, which has made me VERY self concious, before it never used to get to me but now its taking effect since i'm older. Now I don't even show off my arms due to the size of them, I'm just really embarrased of myself. I won't even go to a gym because I don't want other people to see how bad I am and i'd be to scared incase I was doing things wrong.

Ok what I need advise on is:

I am looking to tone up, I don't want to be huge I just want to be happy with myself and also don't want people to comment on me. Since I won't go to a gym im going to buy a bench press and some weighs that I can use in my house. I need advice on what type of weights to buy, how much I should be lifting and how often etc, basically I want to know everything since i'm a noob at this stuff. I'll start going to the gym after I tone up a bit, which I have no idea how long that will be so it would also be appreciated if you could shed some light on that to me aswell, like how long it will take to notice a difference.

I've even just stopped smoking so that I can get more healthy again and I go running for like 1 hour, 3 times a day. I was a heavy smoker, this shows how determined I am to tone up.

I currently have a girl friend and she says i'm fine the way I am, but I don't think I am personally.

Sorry for my life story :p. I'm looking forward to hearing the replies.

Thanks.

I feel your pain dude. A couple years ago, I was 5'11", 125 pounds...

Don't worry about getting toned, you just need to add some mass. With your new weights, stick to the basics. Benchpress, bent over rows, squats, deadlifts, and chinups. Try doing a full body routine 3 times a week. Each exercise should have between 6-10 reps at 3 sets each.

Eat, eat, and eat some more! Bump your calories by 250-500 a day... add proteins like chicken, fish, steak, etc.

Don't run! Running is the devil (when it comes to trying to gain weight, anyways)! Doing a full body routine in 60-75 minutes will get you sweating and your heart pumping as much as running, since you're a noob. ;)

Basically, eat, lift full body 3 times a week, and rest. You'll start noticing changes in your body compisition within weeks... you just have to remember that you won't get huge overnight - it's a process that takes a little time. Stick with it, and you'll do fine.

Good luck dude!

Thanks a lot for the help man, its really appreciated :).

Is there a section here that tells me how to do the different lifting techniques, such as chinups and stuff? Since I have absolutely no idea about this stuff :)

Thanks for the encouragement, it really does make me feel more confident :)

Cheers.

Start eating and get a good training program.

And i feel you're pain. i used to be super skinny myself, much thanks to the help from this site, im now 86kg and 193 cm tall. instead of 69kg and 188 cm tall (which was where i was at when i started)

And heres something to think about:
If you met a guy who was fat, would you stare at him and say "Oh my god, you're so FAT!"?
No?
Well, if you see a really skinny person, dont comment.

EDIT: Dont be afraid to join the gym, i was too. its one of the best things ive ever done.
