need a straight answer on soreness

Ok here is a perfect example of asking 4 trainers the same questions and getting very different answers. I've asked no one on here so don't fret.

Why do muscles get sore?

trainer A: you are not hydrated enough
trainer B: you aren't pushing yourself hard enough if you're not sore
trainer C: you aren't stretching properly
traner D : you have overtrained.

Now I get sore occasionally i.e. when I do something totally new for the first time. My arms and legs typically feel like jello when I'm done but this only lasts for a short time. I do a stretching routine after every work out. I drink 2 large glasses of water while working out also.

so am I really not pushing hard enough if I'm not sore the next day? I feel like I've really pushed to the limit on every weight day.

What about 'none of the above'?

As I understand muscle soreness is just caused by the tiny tears in muscle fibres created by pushing them further than they're used to going. The weakest break first which is probably why untrained individuals suffer badly from soreness when they first start training

The soreness is called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and many people never really get it so it definately isn't a sign you're not pushing hard enough. It's also not a bad sign either though

CCR FTW. He's 100% right, those trainers are idiots. But I'll give partial credit to Trainer D.

that makes perfect sense. Would explain why I do get sore when I try new exercises. Its good to know its not because I'm not pushing hard enough.

thanks guys.

I was under the impression that we really don't know exactly what causes soreness? We don't know the science behind it, but have some theories. One theory is that as muscle fibers get bigger they put pressure on nerves and blood vessles which makes for that sore feeling.

this has always caused me a little confusion too. some muscle groups seem to get really sore, and other muscles never get sore.

I usually have a day or two of soreness after squats, but my biceps and shoulders rarely ever get sore.... even if i work them as much or more than my legs??
