Losing weight while lifting

Here it is. I'm a 34 year old 6'4" male that weighs 325 pounds. Was 396 back in feb. I've lost it through better eating and walking my dog or riding my bike. Cardio really has been helping me

well I started lifting with a bowflex because my buddy was bugging me to start lifting with him. He pretty built so I figured it would be wise to join him. Well people say you can't gain muscle and loose weight at the same time so is working out with him going to hinder my weight loss? I don't want to pass up an opportunity to work out for free with a good partner but at the same time I want to lose weight and get smaller not bigger.

my whole objective is to be thin and built. Not huge but nice and cut up. I really don't know what to do.

Grebber,
Great work so far and keep it up! You must really be noticing that type of loss. Although it is possible to gain muscle while losing fat it is difficult. It's easier for someone that is just starting out.

The way you should be looking at is to preserve as much muscle while losing the fat. Alot of people will just focus on a number on the scale and not care it they are losing lean body mass. This can actually hurt them in the long term. Sure they can reach their goal weight but they get the skinny fat look which nobody should want.

Stay in a calorie defecit(about 500-750 below your target amount of calories) and continue to weight train.

Slow and steady wins the race. Good luck and keep us posted.

I feel great losing that much weight so far. I feel I still look the same as in shape wise but am smaller. I understand why it's hard to lose while gaining muscle scale wise. BUT I can't helpbut think I can do both at my current weight. I'm going to take pictures and measure parts of my body just in case the scale fails me. My callorie intake has been way too low but Im not gonna get into the reasons why, but I can't argue with the results I have had.

now that im going to lift, I'm going to increase my callories simply because my intake ATM is so low it is hurting my lifting time and I feel horrable afterwards. I'm chalking the feeling like shit up to not having the energy to begin with because of my low cal intake. Hell I burn my days intake on my bike ride alone.

anyways. Increasing callories but still be in negative.
Incorporating lifting into my excersize and hopefully get bigger arms while still dropping clothes sizes.

As far as what I eat, lots of veggies like salads and brock, tuna and chicken and sometimes fish. Apples and bananas here and there. I'm very proud of what I eat now and how clean I have become. Now that I'm at a little more reasonable weight I will add more callories. Was trying to get to 300 first but meh.

I'm really lost on what food had carbs/protein/whatever ATM so I haven't locked down a nice meal plan yet. It's been a wonderfull journy so far and has been a fairly simple journy as well. I really just need to learn more about foods and what exactly to eat now

You probably will do both now as you are just starting out. Also, when you lose fat it will give the impression you're gaining muscle becasue they are more visable.

The scale will play with your mind. I would stick with measurements.

How few are you eating?

Dont focus on "bigger arms" focus on a complete full body workout.

Read the sticky threads at the top of each forum and you will get help devloping an eating plan

Congrats on your journey. Keep it up!!!

Skinny fat is when your face looks skinny and drawn, thin arms but yet your belly is still huge.
There's another definition of "skinny fat" that I use and I know a lot of people use ...

It's when you're at your goal weight but you don't LOOK slim or fit. You might or might not have a belly when you're "skinny fat" ... but you're out of shape and flabby.

To me that's "skinny fat" and it mostly applies to people who have lost weight through diet exclusively and not done any exercise or built any muscle.

esentially the same thing. people look slim because there body comp is off. their body fat is still high. Usually because they lost a lot of muscle.

usedtobefatmatt,

My callory intake is between 1000-1500. yes I know it is way low but I got a nice chunk of my weight off in a pretty nice time. Now that I'm at a more reasonable weight I'm going to up it

hey asstocia,
if you are going to be pushing something and want to be respected you need to spell the word lose properly.

If you LOSE weight your pants will be LOOSE.

you've heard correct. it's impossible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. However, there are 2 exceptions, if you're waaaay fat, and it you're completely new to weight lifting. Since you meet both these requirements, it will be possible for you to do both, but only for a while. once you've trained a few months and are getting closer to your natural body weight, you are then faced with the choice to gaining fat and muscle, or losing fat and muscle.

muscle requires a calorie excess in your diet. muscle is built from food. not enough food, then no muscle gained from rest. As such, it should be apparent that an excess of food also means a gaining of fat.

Weight training will not hinder your weight loss. It will only help it if anything as proper weight training will yield a much greater calorie burn than regular cardio will. I barely do any cardio, and just through weight training and diet changes I can gain or lose muscle and fat.
