L-Glutamine?

Yesterday I bought some Mega Men multi's and L-Glutamine at GNC and so far I've taken 2 Multi's and 1 L-Glutamine last night before bed. I just went to the bathroom and my urine was extremely yellow!!! It has never been like this before. I'm drinking lots of water and I had 1 cup of coffee this morning. This is kinda scaring me so I was wondering if anybody has heard of either of these two things causing this. Also, what does L-Glutamine really do? I've heard it's good to take. Thank u

As for the yellow pee dont worry its from the vitamins :). Not sure exactly why it does this but no need to worry :)

from what i've heard, yellow urine after starting up with a multi is pretty normal. but personally i dont care for it to stay. it could mean you're pissing them out from getting too much or you're not absorbing them.

as for glutamine, there are many misconceptions about this product. its good stuff but only for what its supposed to be used for.

Here are the reasons to take glutamine.

1) Immune support. Supplemental use of glutamine, either in oral, enteral, or parenteral form, increases intestinal villous height, stimulates gut mucosal cellular proliferation, and maintains mucosal integrity. It also prevents intestinal hyperpermeability and bacterial translocation, which may be involved in sepsis and the development of multiple organ failure. One study reported that athletes reported fewer incedences of upper respiratory tract infections while supplementing with glutamine (2 grams) after they ran.

2) Gastrointestinal support. 70-80% of orally administered glutamine is absorbed into the cells of your GI tract. It remains there and is metabolised by those cells without ever reaching the blood stream. In sicknesses such as sepsis it has been shown to help improve survival because of improved GI tract function.

Thats pretty much it.

There is no real benefit for someone looking to build bigger muscles. That 10% of dietary glutamine that gets past the GI tract is taken up by the liver where it is converted into sugar (gluconeogenesis) and stored as glycogen in the liver.

Don't let in-vitro research fool you into thinking oral glutamine will have an effect on a healthy individuals muscle mass. Yes, glutamine does regulate protein synthesis to a certain extent under some situations. However, you can't make it happen by taking it orally. Don't let ads with some pro-bodybuilder holding a bottle of glutamine fool you. Even if that pro-bodybuilder is taking it...it isn't doing anything for him either.

apparently not as the majority of powered supplemental glutamine doesnt make it past the gut. also a guy who studies this stuff and posts on another board said this:

soreness is primarily caused by ROS (reactive oxygen species)induced damage... in order to reduce ROS you need to supplement with anti-oxidants... unfortunately glutamine is not one.

but remember that glutamine is a protein and you get a good supply of it in cottage cheese, yogurt and milk. even most whey protein supplements have an extra 3-4 grams thrown in. now that would be an entirely different story and maybe what the supplement companies are basing their info on.

but powered glutamine is great for gut health and that cant be denied. its not a worthless supplement like some say. ;)

cool thanks, then this canister of glutamine isn't as important as i thought, for my training. But imma still use it.

it states
-anti catabolic amino acid.

does this mean it prevents some muscle break down?

That's happened to me before. I was really worried at first. I had taken a Multi vitamin when it happened, but then my mom told me that it was normal. (That's how much your body doesn't use; at least with the multiple vitamin that's the case.)

these are the reasons for supplemental glutamine as i has posted earlier

nothing concerning muscles in there. if you're like me and have problems with digestion, you should see some benefit. but remember, you get a good amount in cottage cheese, milk and yogurt. the stuff does have some benefit so its not a total waste. ;)

hmm yeah i agree that the 2 things glutamine does isn't doing much for muscles.

but why does it say anti-catabolic, isn't this the decrease in muscle breakdown?

and isn't it false advertisement Lol?

thanks for the detailed reply abear. Helps alot. But I was talking about the multi when I said "pissing it away". Sis celtic said that's what your body doesn't use, so is there any use?

i found this from alan aragon, someone i have huge respect for so i trust him

for us bodybuilders, glutamine can be put to use as an anticatabolic/anti-immunosuppressive agent. in other words, supplemental glutamine may help an underfed, overtrained bodybuilder maintain lean tissue & potentiate immunity during a cutting or precontest phase which is hypocaloric & catabolic by nature. however, during either bulking or maintenance when calories & overall nutrition is at least adequately meeting training demands, supplemental glutamine's effectiveness is questionable. it's been established that glutamine has poor oral availability, so it's advisable to have at least 10g/d - if dieting pretty aggressively - to see any anticatabolic effect. but as with all supplements, the placebo effect is built in nicely if you believe it will work in the first place

so i imagine this where they get the anti-catabolic stuff from
