Item to track how far you've jogged?

I've been meaning to find out how fast I can do an average mile or how far my jogs even are nowadays, but I find running on the Treadmill a lot different than when I am out on the bike trail. Are there any items out there that would track how far you've gone?

I know of pedometer's, but I don't know too much about them. Don't they just count steps, and not options for km, m etc?

-Pedometers do count steps, but also account for stride length to give you a distance. So, the pedometer I had would tell me how many steps I went, plus a milage number

-There are some nice HR monitors that have GPS features built in that will tell you the distance and pace - they are pretty expensive though.

-I know there are some applications for the iPhone and Blackberry that uses the phones GPS to track your distance and pace. I haven't tried one myself but I know there are a couple of free ones and a couple you have to pay for.

-Also, you can use a website like that allows you to use google maps to trace your running route and it will give you the milage (and pace if you enter time). Works really well if you run on roads, but no so well if you are running on trails in the woods.

I hope that helps!

For me I "jog the streets". Like in a few moments, I'll be heading out for my every other night 4 mile jog. I jog the streets and make note of my start time and end time. Once I got an "average" time pinned down on a consistant basis, I then drive the same jogged distance in my vehicle. Make note of its odometer reading. My vehicle states 4 miles from end to end. When I jog on my bike trail the same start/finish time, the assumption is 4 mile distance as well. Especially since I jog at a consistant speed. This same "equivelant to street jogging time" of measuring end/end distance might work for you as well...
