Is this long enough to work out?

I do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 10 on the elliptical..so 40 minutes total daily. Will that make me lose weight or should I do more?

To me, machines keep the body moving. If doing 40 minutes of "slow pace" exercise, then machines do very little "extra" weight reduction improvements. If doing 40 minutes of "near suicide" fast pace on same machines, the body does burn more energy. Thus, answer to your quesion isn't a YES or NO reply. Your situation also depends on what intensity you exercise your body at. Your age, your current weight, etc. etc. factors as well.

When my body was 60 lbs "over weight", I found that walking up/down stairs, doing TM at moderate speed, etc. etc. made my body sweat. Even nightly 2 mile "fast pace" walk got my cardio working higher. Thus, one could say (as default) that my body's was enduring intense exercise levels, and the 40 minutes of exercise was dropping its extra weight. Now that my body is 60 lbs lighter and "use to" intense cardio exercise every day, jogging up/down 12 flights of stairs for 30 minutes is now considered a "warm up". Warm up because my heart rate isn't racing and my body isn't over heating (from this exercise anymore). Yet, 12 months ago, these same exercises would have been a huge struggle for my body...

Long post short... Do keep you body's current weight and its current exercise "comfort" level in mind. If your current 40 minutes is NOT breaking a sweat or making your cardio push above 80% LOAD (compared to its normal day rate), then your body won't drop its extra weight. Doing "low intensity" (for your unique body) for 40 minutes is the same exercise "endurance level" as walking to your local bus stop (sort of speaking).

Exercise is only part of the equation :) Bottom line is you need to create a caloric deficit to cause fat loss. Great info in the stickies about this :)
