but I need some help finding exercises that will work my tummy that I can actually DO. I am pretty out of shape, and I have found that I can't do satisfactory sit ups or crunches. My stomach area is really out of shape, and I can't even barely do a sit up. I would really like to know if there are some easy exercises that I can do so I can work up to real exercises.

To move to a different part of the body:I'm learning to do push ups, but right now I can only do the knee push ups. I don't have any weights, but I should probably get some.

:p Anywho, thanks in advance for reading this.

ab exercises won't spot reduce your stomach.. only fat loss will do that...

but if you're looking to strengthen your core - googling core exercises will give a good start and you can pick and choose what your body can do... Belly dancing is also a fun way of exercising your core...

I have never been able to do a sit up - or a crunch -not even when I was young and in a lot better shape than i am now... crunches on a ball are a little easier to do -and less painful on the lower back...

I asked because my mom said that would be the only way I could get a flat tummy. Is that not true? I guess it's a popular myth, if so.
thanks for the response!! :D

Also, it's nice to know I'm not alone in my inability to do a crunch! haha Thanks!

You could try sitting straight up in a chair, then lift your legs up, keeping your legs bent in the starting position. This I believe will work your lower abdomen. Also, bicycling works the core too! Just don't give up, keep pushing yourself to do a sit up about 20 times a day until you can do them!

Moms are usually right about a lot of things-- except that eating after swimming -not so right - catching a cold with wet hair -not so right -and sit ups = flat tummy - not so right... :D

There's a blog I read occassionally - wherethe writer was going on about the amount of products being sold to give you great abs - the writer contends that EVERYONE has great abs.. it's just that most people's are covere by fat - get rid of thefat and you'll get the abs.. .:D

that said -a strong core is essential- it helps with your back - posture, balance, etc..so don't neglect it...

haha thanks. I'll see what I can find and maybe try that chair thing.

:willy_nilly:

I do the treadmill on a regular basis now (at least, I'm trying to!) so I get the cardio, but I do need to check on exercises for the rest of my body :)

Thanks guys!

Pre-sit up abdominal exercise. My wife showed me this one.
Stand with your back flat against a wall. There will typically be a hollow in the small of your back, that you can slide your fingers into. Tighten your abdominal muscles to compress your hand against the wall. Hold for 10 seconds & release. rest 10 seconds & repeat 10 times do this3 times a day.
You can also do this lying flat on the floor, feet flat on floor, knees bent 45°.

When you can do this and compress your hand tightly, remove your hand and now imagine a penny behind you, & you need to hold it against the wall or floor.

Hope this helps

Hey Lily, that's great progress. Keep it up!
When I started Last March I could only do 10 situps at a time.
Do 1 set of 10, rest a couple of minutes & do 10 more, for 3 sets.
Do this 3 times a week.
When that feels ok, (couple of weeks) add one to the set. As you increase reps , reduce the sets by one: at 15 reps just do 2 sets.
I did this and in 3 months I was up to 40 situps in one set.

What Maleficent stated about core strength is 100% accurate. I've had lower back ache fore years, but Its' gone, once I strengthened my abdominals & improved my posture it's gone away.

Good luck & Hang in there

Hey this site might help you out..

exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

it is a directory of exercises based on body part. Now there are tons of exercise directories out there, adn this is not the best, but it has helped me in the past.
