Hello just a few questions about working out

OK, im totally out of shape, infact at the tender age of 22 im morbidly obese at 6'6" 358 pounds, i just joined the gym and im focusing on cardio, so i get on the stationary bike and ride for about 13 minutes (went about 2.3 miles on the 1 setting), i noticed my legs were like lead for about 20 seconds after doing this (PS i never learned to ride a bike so this is a whole new movement for my body also, me Being an idiot i didn't stretch before hand) After the bike I walked in place for like a minute to get the proverbial lead out and hit the tread mill, i noticed at the 1 setting, granted i just got off the bike my heart rate was close to 130, so i walk on 1.5 for about 14 minutes, and figure this isn't going to do much for me, i juice it up slowly to 2 even for the 20 minutes or so, then i juice it up to 2.5 i was shocked to see at the 2.5 setting my heart rate was at a staggering 148-150 i know these things aren't 100 percent accurate but i got spooked so i slowed it down. As the treadmills speed dropped so did my heart rate back down to the 130's i hit a 100 calories about 40 minutes burned and hopped off only to find that my legs were no longer lead but more like jello/floaty like walking on a cloud , now i haven't worked out for a awhile and i my eating to like 2500 calories a day opposed to what i was eating (like alot) and i walk my dog everyday, not to mention i quit smoking cigarettes and pot in December, and the feeling went away in like two minutes after some regular ground walking and a quick bottle of water but i must admit i was weirded it out by the feeling and a tad lightheaded (this went away almost instantly).

I was just wondering if anyone can relate to the feelings i was having after my first work out, hell i've just gotten over a deep depression and even before that i was pretty sedentary so im pretty much an exercise virgin, and i didn't feel any soreness, or chest pain or anything alarming like that, not to mention after i started my BP meds my doc encouraged me to exercise (and i got 2 private EKG's at the hospital to make sure this was a good idea) and pretty much i just want to be safe when im exercising, sorry for the long winded post i guess i just want some closure/peace of mind ...also any tips on obese men looking to lose like 130 pounds in about 18-24 months would be nice.

The feelings you are describing in your legs are not odd nor anything to worry about -- this generally happens when you have worked yourself very hard. However as you are new to exercise i may suggest turning down the intensity ever-so-slightly as you do not want to be put off continuing exercise because of these new and strange feelings.

Just to clarify -- there is nothing to worry about,

Well done for working hard and taking the step to change your life,

Sean Ryan

hey edisraw,
welcome to the forum! and congrats on making the big change! i'm 5feet and weigh 156.7kgs(345.5pounds). i hadn't exercised for almost two years untill just over 2 months ago when i decided enough was enough. so i started eating healthy, but was still to 'embarassed' about my body to do any exercise like walking outside or joining a gym. Then one day i decided i had to do this for ME, and found a nice small gym that i knew i wouldn't bump into anyone i knew. I started working out just 5 weeks ago and have never looked back since. I now go to the gym on average 4days a week, hoping to make it 5days. And my gym programme consists of 45min treadmill, then some weights, then 45min aerobics class. Basically i make sure i do 90mins of cardio everytime (broken into two sessions of 45mins), it could either be all treadmill or two different aerobics classes etc basically a mix and match of activities to keep things interesting.

i remember being very self concious those first few days, but now the gym is like my second home...i usually pump up my ipod with some good music and it's just me and my music throughout which helps block out any distractions.

otherwise, all the best in your new beginning...there's plenty of support on here and a wealth of useful information. :cheers2:

I wouldn't see me making it doing 90 minutes of cardio at this point, i was thinking i was gonna go the the gym do like 10 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes of various weights, and sit ups and what not, and then finish it off with 20-35 minutes on the tread mill and as it becomes routine i'll slowly crank it up a notch...there is also a yoga class im interested in...but i think i'll wait until im under 300 before i start doing that.

hey edisraw...so long as your working out, thats all that matters! and i think your doing an EXCELLENT job for a start! everyone is different and everyones body is different, so what works for one person may not work for the next and vice versa. e.g i APPLAUD you for doing the bike because as much as i'd like to i physically can't because the seat is too small for me and since i'm short would still need to loose quite abit before i can comfortably climb on and climb off the bike.

just for the record, i apologise if you misunderstood my post, i wasn't by any means suggesting you do 90mins cardio, i was just letting you know what i do currently because you had mentioned in your original post you wanted to hear from people who were of similar weight. i think what your doing for a start is really GREAT and at the end of the day you should only do what's comfortable with YOU.

otherwise welcome to the forum, it's practically changed my life since i know i'm on the same journey as many other people...i no longer feel alone in this. all the best :)

I am no expert (far from it, just started my weightloss journy a couple months ago as well) but at your weight, I would assume your resting heart rate is going to be quite high. I dont think you need to worry about it being at 150 while exercising. I personally do the elliptical machine most of the time, my heart rate is around 170. Did you feel winded, or out of breath while doing this?

You know strangely enough not really, if anything i just felt bugged that i was doing what seemed to be so little yet my heart rate was so high....btw my resting heart rate is usually around 78-84 which is on the high side.

Well done for joining a gym and having the motivation to change your body. I would recommend making sure you always do a warm up before you exercise so some mobility, a pulse raiser for about 5-7 mins followed by stretching which I see you mentioned you forgot which is easily done if you haven't been going to a gym consistently. I would also recommend doing some weights on different days from your cardio as the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn which makes weight loss easier. I hope you understand these are just a few things I recommend to help you, not to tell you what to do lol. Well done on joining the gym though and I wish you all the best.
