just like the title says. I'm going on 6 weeks of trying to get fit. Been eating healthy and when from 3 minutes to 15 miles of biking daily.
Now I want to start jogging. Tryed it yesterday and it sucks LOL. Ankles hurt and above them. Thought riding would have made it Easter and enable me to jog longer.

I'm 6'4" and about 350 lbs will know my exact weight thursday.

I would love to be able to jog a mile straight. Am I asking to much formy size? Can it be done

i'm 146kgs (320pounds), and a proud 5feet in height...lol! anyway, i recently made a lifestyle change and i'm on week 4 of my exercise programme. i do 45min treadmill, then some weights, then another 45min treadmill (or aerobics class).

at the moment on the treadmill i alternate between brisk walking but most of the time do moderate paced walking on medium-steep incline. i cannot for the life of me attempt to jog for fear of shattering my ankles to bits...lol! so will keep walking on incline or brisk walking untill i get to a certain weight where i'm comfortable to jog....but everyones different so different bodies can handle different things.

there's some experts on here who may be better placed to answer your question and perhaps getting your doctors opinion as well?

Jogging is hard on everyone's body, but especially on people with extra weight. When I started at 242 pounds I couldn't run for a minute at a time with my legs killing me. Now at 193 I can run for a couple of miles without stopping, and it got easier and easier as the weight came off. If it physically hurts your body to run on a treadmill or the road I would suggest using the elliptical machine (or other cardio that doesn't pound your joints). As your weight goes down increase your pace on the treadmill. Eventually, your weight (going down) and your pace (going up) will allow you to run.

That's just my opinion as a newish runner :)

I'm 270 and 6'1" and can run if I really put my mind to it, its not my joints that really bug me, its my jiggly fat around my stomach and back that really get to me, it gets really itchy to the point where its a little painful. I'm not sure if everyone feels the same way, just personal experience. I do feel like running takes more out of me and thereby hopefully burning more calories, though I don't know if that is fact or not, just seems that way.

Good point Eddie C, if you have places where your skin is rubbing together and causing problems you can use 'Body Glide.' Most runners swear by it. Just google body glide to read more, or go to a local sporting goods store and you should be able to find it.

I can only give you advice from my experience.

I started out at 420 lbs and couldnt walk but a couple feet at a time and i would get winded. my feet allways hurt and my lower back was allways twingey. I started on the treadmill walking a mile ( i told myself i would not get on a treadmill and stop if i wasn't going to do a mile) and could walk a mile in 26 minutes. Through a process of walkinging a 1/4 mile and jogging a 1/4 mile on the treadmill, now i can run an 11:40 mile which is 5.2mph on the treadmill with out stopping.

I would start on a low impact surface.

I tried running on concrete a few weeks ago, and couldn't keep nearly the pace i can on a treadmill. My body just punishes my feet and knees to hard on concrete.

switch it up between the elliptical and the bike as well. they work out different part of your legs, which will ultimately make it easier to jog.

Good luck to you sir!

also, check there are alot of local walking and jogging clubs.:hurray:

thanks for the replys.
i dont have a treadmill atm nor an eliptical. i have a sweet towpath tho.
i wanted to start jogging as another form of workout besides biking. i ride every day 10 to 15 miles and it took alot to get up to that point but there i am.
so far my ankles are the only things that bother me when jogging. i jogged a quarter mile today and mabe a half mile all together while giving my dog a walk. it was hard while trying to keep her to run with me but im sure thats prolly i could do any ways.
hopefully i can just build on what im doing while still riding my bike.
