Exercise - all at once or spread out over the day??

Hi everyone!!

Whats the best way to exercise?? Currently I walk/hike (couple of hills and stairs) for 45 minutes at a conservation park, hop in the car, drive 5-7 minutes to my local Contours (weights and cardio), do a 25 minute work out there, hop in the car again, drive home and do a 30 minute session on my treadmill or cross trainer.

Is that the best way to do it? All in one hit (I like it cause it gets it out of the way!!) or would my body respond better and with faster results if I were to spread it out over the day??? I try to do it 5-6 times a week!

Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday!!

I don't think it matters much.

The only time it would matter is if the cardio was interfering with your strength training to a degree you were unable to bring intensity into the gym or vice versa.

But in either case it's not necessarily wrong... it's just not optimal.

A lot goes into optimal and what's optimal for me might not be optimal for you. And what's optimal right now for you surely won't be optimal for you next month or the month after since our bodies are dynamic (adapting).

I can tell you that what you're doing isn't going to matter one way or the other so I truthfully wouldn't split hairs and just go out and do it.

i would say it doesn't really matter. whatever works for you, due to time constraints basically. sometimes i do weight training in the morning, then go back to the gym in the evening to do cardio on the treadmill/elliptical. or sometimes i do it all at once. it seems to work either way, so i wouldn't worry about it.

Whatever works to get you moving is best. I often do mini-workouts because my kids constantly need me. At one point, I stopped doing them because I started to doubt that 10 minutes of exercise was worth getting sweaty over. I ended up gaining weight (quickly, too, because my body hates me like that :ack2:). So, in my opinion, every bit of exercise counts, especially if you'd turn to eating in place of that exercise (like I did sometimes).

.

Personally, I prefer several intervals of training evently distributed across the day. For example, 4 x 1 hour sessions instead of 1 of 4 hours of same "intense" session. If one exercises too much consecutive time, their body can "go over the top" (sort of speaking). Especially if one's body is older. Like my age 45 year old body. Several 1 hour blocks of exercise spread across the entire day works best for me....
