Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to get a few opinions on Cross Trainers. I'm currently walking 4 miles (6.5km) most days and now would like to add some more cardiovascular workout to my regime. I don't want to use a treadmil as it's the similar to walking / running like I am already doing. But I've heard that these Cross Trainers are supposed to be very good. Any info appretiated.

I'm not sure what a crosstrainer really is - crosstraining in my frame of reference is something else that you do on different days.. that could be swimming - elliptical - biking - whatever makes you happy.

Long story short -what's good is what you will do consistently...

If cardio is your only exercise - i'd probably add in some weight training as well...

Thanks for the reply I have added a picture to show everyone what I mean. There maybe some USA - UK name change going on here.

that's looks like an elliptical...

I'd give it a test run in the store... see how you like it... check for sturdiness of it and how you feel on it

my answer doesn't change.... if it's something you will use..then it will be effective otherwise it becomes a fancy clothes rack in te room of your choice :D

Oh don't worry it's something I'm intending to use nearly every day. Can't try them in the store unfortunatley but it's 1 of two that will take my weight at the moment.

Yes, I found out these are called Eliptical Trainers in the U.S and I'm looking for what kind of result they give compared to other equipment. i.e rowing machines etc.

Thanks for the info.

Elliptical Trainers are excellent. Its the main cardio equipment I use at the gym. Its better than walking cause it gets ur heart rate up and burns double the calories as walking. Its also alot easier on the joints. Have fun xoxo

The elliptical is my cardio of choice - BY FAR! If I could endure running, I would, but after several days in a row of running my knees ache. The elliptical is much more fluid in motion and you don't have the impact of your feet hitting the ground. Trying out the machines is a must. Machines like the one you posted were very uncomfortable to me. I highly recommend the machine below. At $600 (US) it's a real bargain. It has the closest feel to a piece of commercial equipment that I've found.

I personally use the cross trainer more than anything else at the gym... if I could only use one piece of equipment that would be it. :)

I feel like doing a bit of work on my arms is good, (only other thing that does this is the rowing machines) also although it gives me a good workout and my heartrate and temperature go up but I still find it a managable excercise, unlike say the treadmill where I get out of breath and have to stop jogging after only 5 or so minutes! :ack2:

Well, I have one on order and it should be here within 14 days. There's not a lot of options for ones that cater for my weight. Although I'm pretty sure that's going to be coming down. Depending on how much I do use this I'll possibly end up investing in a rowing machine also in time. But that's a little way of but thanks for the info everyone.

...that's why you're not supposed to run several days in a row. your body needs time to heal.

I use an elliptical on my off days (non running) during the winter. great machines.
