Climbing-Type Exercises

Hi All,

I'm looking for some simple ways to exercise my upper body for climbing-type exercises. Basically, I'd like to get strong enough so that I can pull myself up up onto a 6' wall, or climb through a high window opening, or pull myself onto a tree branch, or get myself out of a ditch. These are actually things that would be very helpful to do, but I currently can't.

I've been doing bodyweight, dumbbell, and cardio exercises for almost a year, and I've gained a lot of strength and lost a lot of weight. However, most exercises are for lifting, not climbing (gravity only works in one direction). This would be pretty simple if I had access to a cable pull-down machine, but I don't. Likewise, I don't have a tree for a climbing rope. I have a doorway chinning bar that I use a lot ( I can almost do a full chin-up -- that's progress! :eek: ), but I think it would be helpful to also pull my body up and over something, and I can't do that in a doorway. I'm really looking for something that I can do at home with absolutely minimal additional equipment.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

without access to any type of cable pull-down machine, you're going to have to work with the chinup bar as much as possible. Get a chair and do negative pull-up/chin-ups (start at the top and lower yourself slowly). Try switching grips to mix it up a little.

To climb over a wall or out of a ditch, you need to focus on your core as well. Deadlifts, squats, leg raises, will all help you in this area.

If you're interested in grip strength (helps a lot in climbing), check out . There are fingerboards, collegeboards and all sorts of workouts for ya.

Yesterday I tried something new that seemed to work pretty well. I took an ab wheel, and did upper body raises by pulling the ab wheel from just above head level to below my midsection. It seemed to work the same muscle groups as climbing. I know a lot of people don't like ab wheels, but I like it because it's cheap and very small -- one of the few items that will fit in my very limited storage space.

using a rope

hi mate using a rope or 2 towels. hang them over a pull up mach. then grab both towels and start doing pullups. you will find this works more muscles in your upper body as well as working your hand grip.

sorry i dnt know how to insert a link to a website but

wwwrosstraining.com i a wicked site for strength exercises.:)
