Chair Dips?

Since I don't have a bench press, i did weighted push ups to substitute, but now that i'm doing 70lb push ups my back is kinda hurting because it is really hard to keep my back straight and do the presses with that much weight on the back.

So I was thinking of if its possible to replace the push ups with chair dips, since they both work the same muscles? I started doing chair dips recently, and its pretty challenging so i was wondering if i can do that to work the same muscles and keep progressing and end up doing weighted chair dips.

Thanks.:beerchug: Happy Thanksgiving.:jump1:

you probably could get away with it and still have considerable results...the think with chair dips is make sure that chair is secure @@!! lol ive done stupid stuff like that in the past

Yeah they are a substitute but the thing about them is that there is so much emphasis on the triceps which is why alot of people use them as a prodominantly tricep exercise. Do you see yourself getting a bench press in the future some time?

Hmm, well. I don't see myself getting a bench press in the near future, so should i just do chair dips as well as weighted push ups, but instead of a crapload of weight, do 20lb, 30lb weighted push ups with high reps?

And yea, when i did them I felt them ALOT in my triceps, i tried to get my chest more involved by going as low as i can.

Have you got any weights bars etc? You could do pull overs and flys etc. Im guessing being the informed chap you are you already know all the pushup variations.

The only problem with the high reps is the training type eh.

What do you mean by weights and bars? You mean stuff like dumbells? No i don't have those, i just have a curl bar and a lot of weights. And yea, I do push variations as well. Instead of normal weighted push ups, i can try doing dicline as well.

What do you mean the only thing wrong with high reps is the training type?
I know that 6-10 reps is optimal for hypertrophy, but I am sure you can still gain some size benefits doing 12+, just not as much.

Yeah your quite right. Once you get into those higher rep ranges you dont get such a size orientated training response. If you stuck for a bench a swiss ball was always good for me when I didnt have alot of equipment when I was your age.

You could do floor presses but they arent that great. Pullovers is another option. Its quite hard without a bench tho eh

Yea, that would seem difficult of doing without a bench...maybe i could use the coffee table in the garage we don't use anymore..but that might break lol...
My chest isn't really something i'm trying to bring out anymore really, focusing on other upper body parts more( arms, shoulders, back ).

I love dips, but they don't work the same muscles as pushups or bench press. They all work triceps, but dips work upper back and pushups and bench press work pecs.

Since you are not looking for pec enhancement, dips would be a good choice for you.

Yea, I'll keep doing the dips. But I don't want to abandon my chest, and will continue to do weighted push ups but with higher reps/lower weights, and then maybe do some incline/dikline sets as well.

Thanks for all the responses.

I tried doing one arm push ups, i am too weak for those. and hand stand push ups? LOL if i could find a way to balance myself.

do the handstand pushups against a wall.
maybe try a really wide foot stance on the one arms and see if that works. then you can move your foot closer in as you progress.
