Advice On Obtaining A Flat Belly

I am 26 yrs old and in high school I developed a 6 pack. I have always been very slim and last year I tried to gain some weight and put on some but developed a little pouch. After that, I lost weight again due to working a physical job and my stomach was flat again. Since that point I have been trying to gain. Since April, I really have been eating a lot and trying to pick up some weight. I've also been doing some push ups to build my chest. After I do the pushups, I drink ensure plus for protein. One area that's bothering me is my belly. I'm still slim and my belly seems to go outward from my breastbone instead of being flat. I still have a slight pouch on my lower torso. If I stand up straight with good posture and relaxed, my belly curves outward. Yesterday I did some crunches and situps and this morning I really noticed how much my belly went outward. Did I build up some muscles in my abdomen that are pushing it outward? What can I do to get a flat torso?

I have that exact problem, so darn annoying. Hope someone can help.

Edit: I just reread your post again, since you are bulking you need to lift weights or you are gonna get fat I promise you!!! You need to go to the gym or something and do real strength training. Running is the only thing you can do to get a flat torso but you can not bulk and eat a lot if you want to do this either. You are trying to cut for your abs and bulk for your body at the same time and though it might work for a little bit (with strength training not pushups) your body will adapt and then you will have to pick one.

More Info: Okay, 1st of all pushups are not gonna do anything for you, you need to go to the gym. And you need to run to make your abs show because you can not spot reduce fat nor can you do so many situps without weights your abs will poke through your fat. And no you did not gain muscle under your fat on your abs and thats not what is making it bulge out. You probably just ate something and you are bloated. If you want noticable abs do lots of cardio and then clean up your diet. And don't do pushups and situps without weight if you want to get bigger. But depending on what you really wanna do, if you just want your abs to show and get cut, run a lot. But if you want to get bigger its a totally different story and you are probably not gonna get abs when your getting bigger. So if you want abs, your body can't get bigger prob. and you will have to bulk then get the abs later. If all that makes any sense.. lol

Well, doing the pushups just about 6/7 times since May has noticeably built up my pecs. I had nothing there before. I do pushups about 2 times a week. I do want my belly flat as a pancake. So you're saying I should gain the weight first and then do running for my abs to show? I do not want to body build. I just want to gain healthy weight and fill my body out. I want to gain about 20 pounds. Can you tell me about creatine, protein shakes and whey? Should these be used right after working out? Should someone eat right after working out? I have read that when working out, we need extra protein to gain mass.

As you guys age you'll discover more about this one. Fat is not only deposited on the outside of the abdominal wall. The more dangerous fat is deposited amoung the organs within the abdominal cavity.

Understanding fat

There are two types of fat: subcutaneous and intraabdominal. Subcutaneous fat is below the skin, and intraabdominal fat (the traditional "apple" shape) is behind the stomach muscles, and around the organs. Most women store their fat subcutaneously, in their breasts, hips, buttocks, and thighs (the traditional "pear" shape), while most men store theirs in the abdomen, lower back, chest, and the nape of the neck.

Intraabdominal fat is considered the most dangerous. "All of the potential health risks, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease -- are related to the intraabdominal fat," says David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and author of The L.A. Shape Diet.

Yea, the pushups will for only a short period of time mabye, but then your body will adapt after a few weeks, and you will not get more muscle from pushups, ask anyone on here. You actually never did. You just did work and that was a form of cardio and it burnt the top layer of fat off the pecs. If I were you I would bulk up and then cut, but then again if you are not weight training I would just cut. And do not take creatine or protein since you are not weight training at all. So what you need to do is eat a low fat diet and run a lot in the morning. ...

You Are Not Going To Gain Lean Muscle Mass If You Do Not Weight Train. The only thing advisible for you to do in my eyes is cut, so run.. :p

I just started to notice this myself. I guess it's just one of the disadvantages to bulking. I'm not worrying though, once I add on about 20 pounds of muscle, I can cut.

If I am thinking correctly it would be common sence if you are fat and you suck it in you are gonna have a bulge b/c the fat goes up and evertone sucks it in but idk if this is what y'all R talkin about.... :p

I have to disagree about the pushups. I don't know if you saw the part in my posts where I said I am VERY slim. My chest was a flat as a pancake, but now I actually have pecks that I can see and feel. When I do pushups, I feel the burn in my pec area and they grow... I never had a layer of fat over my chest.

How does one get rid of it? I don't think this is necessarily the case though, because I've seen very cut dudes with protruding abs and they have 8 packs. I just want my belly to be flat.

And did you see the part in my post where I said your body will adapt after a little while and nothing will happen anymore if anything grew in the first place?

I have been battling a bloated belly for a long time. I'm 5'9 , weight ~160 pounds and my waist is 34 inches.

If you want a flat belly do HIIT 3-4 times a week and lower your daily calorie intake by 500 calories, and weight lift of course to prevent muscle loss. Good luck.

the fat thing is weird.. i dont really wanna cut, since im still very small and want to get a bit more bulky.. maybe ill have to start cutting soon anyways.

In the morning, its almost not there at all, but when i eat lots it getts worse, i think i "suck it inn" without thinking about it because its only when i think about it and let go that its bulges out.

yeah, if you are gonna cut and run, you should weight lift so you don't looose too much muscle and you try to maintain it but remember you dont weight lift, you do pushups and that is not gonna maintain anything!!!!! ;) :p
