I'm a 15 year old high school boy who is struggling with my weight for someone of my age and height (I'm 260lb and 5'2").

I'm not physicaly active and I skip physical education in school whenever I have it because I don't like it when the boys laugh at me.

I will like to have lost some weight by my sixteenth birthday so that maybe the boys will stop picking on me and that maybe a girl will actually look my way.

Please help me with any suggestions that you may have. I don't want to result in surgery.

Please help bobcat strike back before bobcat can't walk.

Everything you hate, you have to do (and learn to love ideally) and everything you love (namely to eat) you have to reduce and learn to hate. It's gonna suck, just so you know.

You're going to have to start working out to get where you want to go. Depending on what you have access to depends on what you can do. It will be best to do both anaerobic exercise and aerobic exercise. I'll explain both.

Aerobic - most eveyone has heard of this. Cardio is another popular name. Long story short, this is exercise where you will burn a lot of fat. Running, biking, playing sports, walking, and similar activities fall into this category. You need to start slowly, then work your way up towards more vigorous. Walking is a great start. Start short, then work your way up. Once you reach good distances (meaning miles) bump up to a slow jog, and increase intensity. Another way would be to bike, following a similar regiment. Regardless of what you do, start easy and work towards more difficult.

Anaerobic exercise is weight training. This is important too, and lean muscle is a natural enemy of fat. The more muscle you build, the more fat you burn, even during inactivity. This is where cost can come in, as gym memberships aren't cheap, unless your school has weights available. However, this puts you in a position you prefer to avoid for now. So, situps, pushups, and having a creative mind will work fine.

Situps and pushups are self explanitory. The open mind comes in finding other ways to do weight training with items around your house. Do curls with a paint can. Rig a couple pullies in the garage (with permission, of course) and make your own "gym" using rope and whatever heavy items you can find to tie the rope to, to act as weights. A five gallon bucket can hold quite a few rocks, or quite a bit of sand, dirt, water, or whatever.

Finally, you have to watch wat you eat. Calories are either protien, fats, or carbohydrates. Of course there are countless diets promoting (or demoting) one of these. Bottom line is you have to eat few calories than you burn in a day to lose weight. Find what works for you, and stick to it!

Good luck! We're here to help along the way!

the hardest thing about being a teenager is building the self-confidence to do the physical activity and ignore what everyone else is saying ... and, of course, it's easier said then done. Building muscles is a good way to lose weight too, as muscle burns fat.
Chances are, that you are eating a lot because it provides a bit of comfort (it's an Oprah thing). Keep yourself distracted and away from the cupboards ... maybe talk to your parents about removing some of the junk food that may be sitting around your house.
Maybe talk to some of the physed teachers, if you can. They will probably be more than happy to help you out in reaching your goals.

Good luck.

hi bobcat,

i would actually also suggest that you speak to your doctor. At your age you are still growing and there might be something more to be considered. Of course we will support you and try to help you. Why don't you start a diary - I've been wanting to do that for a while already - and write down your activities and what you eat and then we others here can comment and make suggestions and also give praise and motivation.

HI Bobcat,

did we scare you away already? I hope not, cause even though it sounds like work - which it is, it is better to start earlier rather than later. You made the first step by signing up and posting here. Now take the next one, we're all here to help.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I did speak to my mom about removing the junk food in our house. It's been 3 days of not having junk food in the house and it's killing me. However, I have started to notice a difference in my moods. I'm not as moody towards my parents and I find that I don't get my headaches as often. My mom and I have decided to start walking every night for 15 mins. Thanks again!

That was an awesome move on your part, junk food is way too accessable these days. Asking your mom to help you out was a good move. Your lucky to have a mom that is so supportive. Keeping a journal to track your eating and exercise habits is a great idea. I have been meaning to do the same. I too was overweight growing up. It's hard when you don't look the same as your classmates. But keep your head up. You got the foundation started, now you need to keep building and don't give up. Were here for you!!!

Well , honestly , if you that concered about your health then you would have already done something about it i think. Dont let other ppl worry you.. i think you need some help on your self esstemm also. sounds like you aint got alot.
You get do different things like walking and swimming in your own spare time. You will start to c the difference, Dont eat as much.. do sit ups when you eat something

Bobcat, I Know exactly how u feel as a 14 year old i was over weight for my age and i hated the way i looked. no guys ever looked at me and i was very self concious. I started just getting out and walking and lifting weights after school. I now weigh only 130 pounds and am 5 8! keep on going u will get there

Hi Bobcat..How do you get to school, well if you dont live far how about walking insead and also try and drink heaps of water cus it will help to fill u up so you dont feel humgry all the time... Its great your mum is supporting you and you both are going for walks together, my mum and i do the same we are both helping each other.... The reason why the kids pick on you at school is cause it makes them feel better about themselves , So think of it this way if you want (to help you keep motivated) Every time you eat junkfood think its making them feel better about themselves !!!!! All the little things you do WILL help .. You will get there..... keep us posted

.

wussup.
im a 15 year old overweight dood too. im like 230 now, i used to be bigger like 250. i was mad fatter. and then i joined football. if ur like me and cant discipline urself enough to run and not to eat, join the football team and DONT QUIT NO MATTER WHAT. they run you to death, its so good. it made me lose mad weight. and then get in the weight room, if ur school has one. lift every day and become a strong fat dood so u can punk the skinny doods who rag on u. also if u can try and join a boxing class, learn to hit hard if u cant already. and if people rip on u jus rag on the back and smack em around thas wut i do. dont let anyone stop you. im still tryna lose weight so i know wut ur goin thru.

im 16 now in year 10 living in aussie. In year 8 i was the chubbiest thing, half the people would pay me out, half would say i was cute being chubby. I never took any notice then, but when you get more into the girls it'll start effecting u more.

Just use their torments as motivation, keep doin so. Plus stand up for yourself, I bet them kids wouldnt like goin home with a broken jaw or fat lip aye?

Maybe not join a sport team just yet, as if your slower than the rest they may turn on you and do the same thing the boys at school are doing.

Just watch your eating for a start and get something for motivation. When i went on a diet for a month i lost 3kg and everybody started to notice, I havent been called "fat" for about 1.5 years now.

i'm not sure that learning to fight is the best way to cope with being overweight ... i suppose it's good motivation for exercise, but maybe geared the wrong way ... good luck, either way.
