Title: *CALORIES* I have a question about calories. Are all calories from different foods burned at the same rate?? I would think so because a calorie is a unit measure. But like for example if you burn 300 cal. doing a specific activity: If you had 2 cookies that made up the 300 cal., or had fruits and/or veggies making up the 300 cal. will each get burned at the same rate doing that activity?? Would it matter which you had?? I know you should eat healthy for all the right nutrients and whatnot, but i am just curious about the calorie burning. If anyone can answer this i'd really appreciate it! Name: Tiffany Date: Jul. 23rd, 2001 Title: Re: *CALORIES* Your body doesn't go for any food first... it does go for certain types though. Your body burns Carbs first, regardless of where they came from. More specificly, Glucose, but if it's not getting enough of that fast enough, it turns to Fat as a prefered energy source. This is a much-debated subject, so anyone feel free to correct me if they feel that was inaccurate. " -During endurance exercise the two major sources of energy are carbs in the form of muslce glycogen and blood glucose and fat in the form of free fatty acids. (FFA's). The amount of each being used will be determined by alot of things; such as FFA concentrations, hepatic glycogen levels, endurance, intensity, training. You use both, carbs and fat, at the beginning of cardio, the middle and the end. Name: Kurt Date: Jul. 23rd, 2001 Title: Re: *CALORIES* Does your body also burn muscle glycogen the whole time? And how is the ratio effected? For example, 20 minutes of skipping rope intensely, first thing in the morning, without having eaten anything. Which would be prefered over the other? First thing in the morning is good because you have a high concentration of FFA's from the long fast you have gone through. High concentration of FFA's will cause more fat to be used. As for intensity, higher intensity will burn more carbs, most through glycogen. Lower intensity will cause more fat to be burnt (in relation to carbs) but less calories. If I were to do cardio, I would do it before breakfast at 45-55% V02 max for 20-30 minutes. I wouldn't do much more than this as liver glycogen is already extremely low. Once liver glycogen goes down too far you will start to breakdown muscle.
