Title: Don't Know About The SUGARS! I'm always hearing about watching sugar intake.. and I don't understand, what is more worse, the fat intake or sugar intake? does sugar turn into fat??? and if so then how much does a person need to consume on a daily basis?? I'm confused! like me for example.. i would like to be on a 1550-1650 calorie "diet" I hate that word but can't think of anything else at the moment.. anyway, do I "need" a certain amount of sugar or does can the body go without it?? soo WHATS UP WITH SUGAR!!! :) Name: L.E. Two of the most common simple sugars are glucose and fructose. When we say to watch sugar levels it means not to eat too much foods containing glucose or fructose. Gluocse will cause a quick rise in blood sugar levels and cause the release of insulin. Insulin will cause blood sugar to be pushed into surrounding tissues, like fat. This will cause fat storage. Fructose will cause liver sugar stores to fill. When it fills, our body will store fat. Table sugar is a disaccharide containing glucose and fructose. This will cause both effects, and this is why table sugar is bad for fat storage. Fructose comes from fruits, hence the name. Glucose is found in things that are sweetened (candy, cereal, etc). So what should we eat? Foods containing complex carbs (polysaccharides) will digest slowly (not cause insulin release) or fill liver sugar levels. Carbs from grains are usally your best option. These include oats, wheat, corn, rice, or other grasses. Ok, now for the good news. To cause an insulin spike you are going to have to consume alot of simple sugars. Also, glucose consumed with fat will slow digestion and lower insulin release. Fruits aren' necessarily bad, but eattign alot of them is. Try and limit the amount of fruit you eat in one meal. Carbs should be 50-65 % of your total calorie intake. The amount of simple sugars is up to you, but it should be low. You do not need simple sugars. Fat is dense energy source and has more than double the amount of calories than a carbohydrate. Fats are not necessarily bad. There are some essential fatty acids we require in our diet. But, since fat is a dense energy source it is easier to overeat than with carbs. Hope this clears up some things. Name: Kurt Date: Jul. 8th, 2001 Title: Re: Don't Know About The SUGARS!
