Ofcourse you need Carbs, and lots of them! Your body even produces Carbs by itself. Carbs are what keeps your body doing all it's normal body functions correctly. If you didnt' eat Carbs, it wouldn't be able to produce enough of them to do everything it needs to do. An entire 60-65% of your diet should be from Carbs.
The only problem with Carbs is that they digest slow, which is why they're so great for energy. But, if you eat Carbs 2-3 hours before bed, they won't get digested because your metabolism slows down at night, and therefore they get kept as extra fat.
So, to summarize, you needs lots of Carbs, but cut back 2-3 hours before bed.

From what I've read, it's not that carbs' out right are bad, it's refined carbs. Refind carbs are foods that have been striped of there natural goodness for example; white flour products (breads and cakes), sugary foods, chocolate, white rice etc. If you load up with natural carbs; fruit and veg then they're okay.
