Title: 1000 Calories--Safe???

Is it still healthy for me to eat only 1000 calories a day since I'm only 5'3?

How many calories should I consume to maintain a weight of 100 lbs.?

Also, if I eat 1200 calories one day...should I only eat 800 calories the next day?

I was curious, because I will start eating more if I discover that this slows down my metabolism.

Iam not a expert so I will give you my thoughts. Iam only 5'2 and around 121 and Iam dieting because I have had two kids. With me dieting I take in 1500 calories a day so I would think you could take that many in or maybe even more. Sounds like you are pretty thin already. To maintain your weight you need to eat healthy which you should do anyway but a little treating yourself want hurt and also exercise. I have always read to maintain weight you should exercise 3 days a week. There is no need to eat so many calories one day and cut back the next day. So I wouldn't do the 1200 one day and then 800 the next day. You need more than 800 calories a day. From what you have wrote you seem to already be small so if I was you I would probably not count the calories so much and just exercise 3 times a week and drink lots of water. Just don't load up on junk food. Hopefully one of the fitness expert will reply to your post and they can explain your questions better for you. Good luck!

I'm an exercise physiologist not a nutritionist but here's my advice!!!! 1000 cal. per day is way too little!!!! Your body needs that much just keep you alive (if you were lying down, not moving all day!!!) Your body probably thinks you are starving and is slowing your metabolism by reducing the size of your muscle mass. It does this so the calories you eat will be used to fuel you heart and brain etc... so won't keel over!!! And defintely don't do the 1200/800 thing!!! 800 cal. is way too little! If I were you i would seek the advice of a liscenced nutritionist once or twice just to get an accurate idea of what and how much you should be eating! Treat yourself, and it is an investment in your health!!! Eating too little you are probably not getting the vitamins, minerals, and calcium you need. You could be putting yourself at risk for developing osteoporosis (common in small slight women), and you are most likely totally messing up your metabolism. get some reputable advice from a professional. (the only person that can legally give nutritional advice is a liscenced nutritionist, so don't fall for bogus advice given by lay-people and personal trainers!!!). Good luck.
