I am also 5'7 and weigh 165. i am active because i do ballet two nights a week, and gym in school everyother day.i also feel as if weight is controlling my life and that it only matters how you look these days. My mother is doing a low carb diet and i fear that it is unhealthy for her. i try to eat heathly but when i am with my friends i eat junk food. I read about this new exersise plan in this magazine called fitness, the march issue. if you want we can do it together, and lean on each other. hope this has helped you know there are others out there with the same problems. I started running. At first, it was all I could do to run around the block, which was barely 1/4 a mile. But within months I was running 2 and 3 miles, and before I knew it 6 months had gone by and I had lost 50 lbs and was running 30-35 miles/week. I combined running with eating very healthy. That includes both protein AND carbohydrates. You need fat in your diet also, but a limited amount. And the key to carbs is to eat complex carbs (bread, pasta, cereals) as opposed to simple carbs (sugar). Decide how many calories you want to consume in a day (my suggestion is 1500-2000) and eat 4-5 small meals a day, as opposed to 2-3 larger ones. The caloric breakdown should be roughly 50-30-20. That means 50% of the caloires from carbs, 30% from protein, and 20% (or less) from fat. Each gram of carbs is 4 calories, protein is 4 calories, and fat is 9 calories. On a 1500 calorie diet this would mean roughly 190 carbs/day, 75 grams of protein/day, and 30 grams of fat OR LESS/ day. You can vary this for yourself, and as your running improves, bump up the carbs and protein, but keep the fat the same. Sorry I have written so much, but since I lost the weight I really get into helping others lose it, too. Best of luck to you. With some dedication and motivation, you can do it. Just stay strong. Feel free to e-mail me and let me know how it's coming along. I forgot to add that I am still and avid runner, pushing 50+ miles/week and staying strong, and hitting the gym to lift weights 3 days/week. Good luck! Hi, Melanie - I'm writing to you only to support you because it is very ! that you face the problem at your age. Collin has write to everything, y can just try small steps in a long terme to push your metabolism. Start your day with a good breakfast and try to eat every 3 hours (your next meal can be 1 apple and then your lunch a fruit again and eat very light in the eavening = i.e. a glass of milk with 30gr of cereals or a fruit again). Don't eat after 20:00 - you don;t need to eat junk food, replace it with a carote. Combine this programme with everyday exercice (3/aerobic + 3/weight training days as Collin told you), at the end of the week you will see modifications. I'm French so forgive my ba english.
