Title: Protein

If you're only supposed to have a certain number of eggs a week and a certain number of meat, what are other forms of protein that I could have?

    Hi Paula!

How about: turkey, chicken, fish(any kind of fish will do!), pork, cottage cheese, peanut butter, any type of nuts, soy products (they have chicken and burger type things).

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head but I'm sure someone else will!!!

You could always try protein shakes. I'm a vegetarian so i don't get protein from meat, so i buy the whey protein powder and mix it into milk or water and thats about 24g of protein per serving

I have been thinking about drinking protein shakes because I don't take in enough protein even though I am not a vegetarian. A few things I wonder though; what kind of shakes are good? and how many grams of protein should I have a day based on a 1300 calorie diet?

Please don't get too hung up on protein. There are lots of scientific studies out there that show the average person can get adequate protein from dietary sources alone. The average amount of protein required for a person is aroun 0.8 to 1.5 g/kg body weight per day. This means for a 60 kg or 140 lb person, the protein requirements are 48 to 90 g/day. This can be easily obtained from soy, meat, milk, dairy products. Also keep in mind, that our body cannot easily digest large amounts of protein and even if we do consume large amounts, it is guaranteed that our body will not efficiently use it all. If you feel you must use protein, use either hydrolyzed source such as dipeptides or a whey concentrate protein.
