Title: Sugar Levels I have recently been diagnosed witht hypoglycemia. I eat every hour or so. I am supposed to include lots of protein in my diet. What can I do not to gain weight and keep a healthy diet? Name: minerva Date: Jan. 2nd, 2001 Title: Re: Sugar Levels Hi there I saw that you where diagnosed with hypoglycemia and you are afraid that you might gain weight. No fear this can totally be avoided. The first thing you want to do is avoid what is called reactive hypoglycemia. This is caused by eating quickly absorbable carbohydrates(high glycemia). These will actually cause your blood sugar to drop dramatically due to a out pouring of Insulin from your pancreas. Order a medical journal by Dr. Ann DeWees-Allen on the subject. She's the head of biomedical research at the Glycemic research institute in Washington, DC. If you avoid eating these High (GI)foods and replace them with LowGI ones you might be able to really help your condition. Not only will it help your Hypoglycemia but it will also help with weight control. You see in our country we are so decieved by so many so called "dieticians." They all put us on diets of popcorn, rice cakes, and bread and say the weight will come off. We might get smaller from their "nutrtion plans." However, body fat never changes. This is because, as i've said again and again, adipose tissue(body fat) is extremely hard to oxidize(lose) when there are high levels of Insulin circulating the blood. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas to lower blood sugar. It works like a broom and sort of "sweeps" it up into the muscles as glycogen (stored blood sugar) or stores it in adipose(fat). Rice cakes, popcorn, most breads, sweets,etc...Jack Insulin levels through the roof never allowing the body to tap into it's fat reserves. Also, usually eating High GI foods can make us even hungrier due to reduced blood sugar and certain hormones that can get out of balanced(that's a whole other subject!) A Protein rich diet is essential to a person with your condition and quite simply anyone who's trying to lose weight. Protein doesn't cause much if any real surge in Blood sugar. In fact it stimulates a hormone called glucagon which helps open the door of Fat loss. However, don't eat to much protein. ATTENTION ALL WEIGHTLIFTERS, of which I am one, TO MUCH PROTEIN IN THE BLOOD WILL ALSO CAUSE AN INSULIN SPIKE! Also, protein, yes, PROTIEN can be stored as body fat it all depends on the individuals nitrogen balance and their HGH levels. So just try to eat 1 gram for every 2.2 pds of Body weight every day. No more is neccesary unless your a heavy and intense lifter. If you are, the human body can not really absorb more than .08-1.0 grms per pound of Lean Body Mass a day. People who eat any more are only just eating more calories then they nee. Sorry I went of there for awhile. Try to divide you Macro nutrients up equally. like 33% Carbs (Low GI only) 33% Protien 33% Fat But it doesn't have to be even. I personally eat 40/40/20 When I cut up for summer but that's just what I prefer. If you keep them well balanced it's not going to make that much of a difference. If your able you should incorperate some Aerobic activity into your schedule maybe 30-45 minutes 3 times weekly. Do it on an empty stomach o no ssoner than 3 hrs. after eating. This really helps your Cardiovascular system, Controlling Insulin and other hormone levels in the blood, and burning body fat. Good luck! Any questions feel free to ask. Keep on keeping on! John L.
