Before I answer your question, let me say that eating less than 1600 calories per day (no matter what your size or gender) does not allow you enough food to take in the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals your body needs. Also, not eating enough forces your body to try to store more fat, not less.
If you can do a cardio workout 3-4 times per week for 30-60 min, and lift weights (resistance training) twice per week for 30 min, you would be doing enough. If you aren't already exercising, you should start small and work up to these times over a period of 1-3 months.
The actual activity of lifting weights doesn't burn a lot of calories (relative to intense cardio exercise), but it does build muscle, which allows your body to burn more calories all day long, even when you are sitting at a desk or watching tv.
Activities such as jogging, step class or soccer burn somewhere between 300-700 calories an hour depending on the intensity of the workout. So at 60 minutes 3 times a week you could burn about 1500 calories a week from cardio exercise.
Doing too much intense cardio exercise can lead to many problems including over-training, joint problems etc., so watch how much you do!
