Title: Um...help? Hello, I have a question. I am starting volleyball in highschool in about 2 weeks and i am in no shape for it at all. I love the sport and i want to be ready for it so when i have to try out, I wont be huffin and puffin and close to passing out. I have low blood sugar and its very easy for me to get extremely weak if i wear my body too much, but i figure if i work out and my body gets in shape i wont be as weak. What can I do in such little time to prepare myself for volleyball? thanx Name: gina Date: Aug. 14th, 2000 Title: Re: Um...help? Volleyball will be great fun and also a great way to keep fit, if you're an aggressive player and you're playing atleast a couple times a week. Until then, however, to start getting in shape, you should get a good pair of sneakers (Reebok cross-trainers if you can afford them - $40 and up) and You could begin WALKING. Not like you walk around at school or at home though. You want to walk fast enough so that it feels difficult, so that you're breathing is a little heavy, and while walking, concentrate on taking EVEN breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Do this for 20 minutes the first day, and add 1 minute on every other day until you're up to 30 minutes. Also, as it gets easier, try speeding up your pace to almost a run. In addition, going over some hills will put you in shape even sooner, and you'll probably even lose a little weight before school starts! If you walk atleast 5 days a week, you'll start feeling a difference in your strength and energy in those 2 weeks.. POSTURE TIPS: While POWER-WALKING, keep tummy pulled in, knees soft (slightly bent), shoulders straight and head up, looking straight ahead, elbows bent 90 degrees and arms moving(not swinging) kind of like a marching band person. And,most importantly, BREATHE! Within six weeks, you could be running 20-30 minutes a day and in GREAT shape. Even better, join the track at school also, and between that and volleyball, you'll be a NEW YOU! lOTs of LuCk! Name: laurie Date: Aug. 26th, 2000 Title: Re: Um...help? ADD ON: About an hour before walking, eat a piece of fruit or granola/power bar to keep your blood sugar up and give yourself a boost of energy, and drink PLENTY of WATER before, after, and -if you can- DURING your walk.
