Title: Nutrition I am a recovering anorexic who used to run for over five miles a day while consuming practically no fat in my diet. I am now severely anemic and have been put on iron supplements, but I need to know healthful ways in which to introduce fat into my diet. I am still athletic and I do about an hour of cardio exercise a day. However, I need to gain a few pounds and begin to consume the recommended daily amount of fat. I am 21 years old, female, 5'7 and 114 pounds. Name: Amanda Graff Date: Jun. 5th, 2000 Title: Re: Nutrition I am a certified nutrition specialist and hope I can help. Are you seeing a dietitian as part of your recovery? Anyway, as to getting more fat in your diet, there are many factors to consider. How many calories are you getting per day? I don't know how low in weight you got, or your age, or how long ago you started getting healthier, but you need to be very careful and gently, slowly guide your body back in the right direction. 1800-2000 calories is probably a good number; that's a good range as long as you still have enough energy to sustain your daily activities. Fat should be 20-30% of that, less than 50 grams a day. BUT there's good fat and bad fat! Saturated fat is what clogs your arteries, so keep that down to 10% of your total (30%) fat intake. Monosaturated fats help lower your LDL, which also hurts you and help raise HDL's. An easy way to remember is that LDL should be low and HDL should be high (L=Low, H=High). Sources of GOOD fats are canola or olive oil, avocado, and peanuts (1 oz per day). This is just all off the top-of-my-head; I don't have all my books here. If I can help more, let me know, and good luck! Name: dayle Date: Jun. 7th, 2000 Title: Re: Nutrition Read all of www.donlemmon.com then come back.
