Title: Eating/working Out

Dear nutrition board,
I'm eighteen years old and I love working out everyday. Except lately, I'm being told that working out every day is bad for you. However--that is my confidence and esteem that I have in myself. Another problem I've been having is after my workouts I tend to "pig-out" on all the wrong foods..it gets me quite upset because I'm starting to feel my workouts are pointless. I could really use some help.
thanks...elise

    Dear Elise,
I say go ahead and work out every day--i do the same thing, and it's an energy booster for me. Try eating lots of healthier foods before you run (not too soon before though) so that hopefully you won't be as hungry afterwards. Also, drink a lot of water and try chewing gum or something like that. Sometimes when you think you need fatting food, really all you need is the sugar content, and sometimes things like gum can help. Good luck!

I work out everyday as you do- and contrary to what you may have been told, it is not "bad" for you (to work out everyday). Make sure, however, that you alternate your workouts- do intense cardio 1 day (say 45 min) and light cardio (20 min) and strength training the next.
As for eating- have something light before you go- like half a bagel or a piece of fruit. And plan what you're going to eat after your workout before you go, and then when you're done, look forward to eating what you've already decided to- for example, a sandwhich and a piece of fruit. If you find that you're starving after your workout and you can't stop yourself from "pigging-out" after, try drinking LOTS of water DURING your workout (I drink at least 3 litres at the gym every time). This will fill you up, and you won't be as hungry. Just one last thing- food is meant to be enjoyed (if it didn't taste good then none of us would have a weight issue!), so make sure you find things that are healthy for you that you really like to eat- I love sandwiches and they're great for you- other things that are quick and easy (and good) are pretzels, bagels with low fat cream cheese, fruit, cereal... the list is endless. Good luck to you!

when i feel like "pigging out" after my workout i only eat foods with low or no carbs so my body doesn't gain weight.
if you drink excessive water while eating after your workout
you will "fill up" faster. don't through your hard work down the drain and run around in circles. stay motivated. you're not the only teen that works out every day, it keeps me in shape.

It's not that doing physical activity everyday is bad, it's just that doing intense workouts too often isn't good for you. I like that other post in this thread about doing hard cardio one day, followed by light cardio the next, then weight training the day after that, that is a very good idea.
