Title: Sugars V. Carbs

Alright, I am thouroughly confused here. I have been told three things that seem self negating 1-sugars and and carbs are the exact same thing 2-your body must have both to be active and energetic 3-yet they are both very bad for you.

So, how does this work? Are you supposed to consume just enough to have energy. Or are you not suppose to consume any, and therefore rely on an alternative source for energy?
Thank you very much , THomas

Well, I don't know the exact details and I'm sure some will answer this better for you, but here is my weak understanding. There are different types of carbs, and some are good for you (complex carbs like sweet potatoes, brown rice, wheat bread, some fruits, and veggies) and those that are bad for you because your body stores them/spikes your blood sugar/ etc. (such as sugary foods, some fruits, pasta (white flour), white bread/bagels, etc).
I know that you NEED carbs to have energy and burn fat...but most people take them in to an access and don't take in the right kinds (those that are easier to burn, high in fiber and nutrients). The percentage you need varies on your body, your workouts, and what you are trying to achieve. For example, if I go lower than 100 grams of carbs, I am very fatigued and have severe headaches...I stay around 150 grams a day (but no more) and it seems to work into my eating/fitness plan well (I'm going for a very defined look though and work out several hours a day).
Hope this starts to clarify things for you...I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on here will give the you the specifics!

They are my weakness as well. I've been told that you need to have a percentage of carbs in your diet to keep your system running at peak. A few of the more knowledgeable men on here have suggested making complex carbs between 30 and 50 percent of my caloric intake. I keep it around 40%, but I have dropped the sugar intake and keep my fruits in moderation. As long as you are taking in the "good" carbs, you should be fine! You need them to fuel your workouts and give you a full feeling (high fiber is best). I know they make wheat pasta, and brown rice is a good substitute when you just can't "say no" to the carbs :-)
      Good Luck!

carbs are carbs, but they all have a different GI. the GI is glycomic index, or how fast they spike your insulin. try to stick to lower GI foods, which are like whole wheat pasta, brown rice, oats (old fashioned) etc etc. whole grain is good. sugar is a carb too, but it is a low GI so it spikes your insulin, and leads to a greater crash. i reccomend you do not cut out all your carbs, but try to make better choices. like try ry-crisp crackers- they are high in fiber and low in calories, and dont shy away from carbs, but remember the difference from a portion and a plateful.
