Title: Calories...please Need Some Advice

currently i am pretty active-i go to college but work out 5-6 days a week. 4 days a week i weight train and at least 3 days a week i do cardio for about 30-45 minutes (examples: running, eliptical, spinning class, kickboxing). i keep a diary of my food intake and eat anywhere from 1200 to 1900 calories a day. usually i aim for around 1200. the thing is i calculated how many calories i should take in to lose weight and it usually ends up around 1800 or 1900 ( over 2000 to maintain my weight). i dont know if it;s just me but i dont seem to trust this because it seems like a lot of calories (not that i would mind eating more at all). does anyone have any advice on what i should do? please dont tell me to see a nutritionist; i just want a general idea of where i should be at with this. my goals are to tone and add muscle and definition but at the same time lose body fat. i dont want to slow my metabolism and i'm wondering that if i eat more will it be better for my goals since i would be speeding my metaobolism. i just dont want to gain body fat from eating more and i dont want to be at a stand still where i wont be losing body fat. thanks for any help with this...sorry if i was rambling.

      Title: Re: Sorry Guys

      Here are some general guidelines:
Your bodyweight x 10 = your base calorie intake.

Take that number and multiply it by:

      1.2 if you are sedentary
1.4 if you are moderately active
1.6 if you are extremely active

So for a 140 pound person who is moderately active:

      140 x 10 = 1400

      1400 x 1.4 = 1960

So a moderately active person should eat about 1960 calories a day to maintain their bodyweight. If you want to lose then eat 200-500 calories less per day. But remember these guidelines are general so you may have to tweak them by adding 200 or subtracting 200 calories over the course of a few weeks and see where your individual caloric intake is.

1200 is too few. Your body needs more than that just to maintain itself even if you just stayed in bed all day long.

I completely agree with you, the amount of calories that is recomended seems too high. My recomended calories are also 2000, but I cut my calories to 1300 a day-- have been seing weight loss ever since.
