Amino acids are what makes up protein. Each type of protein has a different amino acid profile. Protein and amino acids are what muscle fibers are made of. If you do not supply your body with enough protein, your muscles will not grow. This is why bodybuilders go crazy about getting protein. But amino acids are also used by numerous other functions in your body. Used to repair red blood cells, hair growth, fingernails, digestion enzymes, etc etc.

RDA suggests 0.6-0.8 grams of dietary protein per pound of bodyweight for athletic people. Alot of other people will suggest at least 1g/lb of bodyweight. I personally go between 1-1.5 g/lb of bodyweight.

If you are looking at specific amino acid supplementation, the only one I know that is somewhat popular is glutamine. It is said to help recovery by increasing the rate at which glycogen is restored in the muscle cells. This is a more advanced supplement. I would buy whey protein and creatine before glutamine.

Thanks for your valuable information, Kurt. I was told that we need to consume certain grams of protein everyday to build or maintain muscle. If I take both protein and amino, do I need to take amino into account for the daily protein amount?

Unless you are an advanced trainee, do not worry about taking specific amino acids. Using protein supplements like whey is easy, but whey is not the best source of protein. It would be better/cheaper if you spent your money buying tuna, eggs, lean red meat, chicken, etc.

And yes, you need a specific amount of protein in a day in order to meet the needs of your body. The RDA suggests 0.6-0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight for an athletic person. I try to get 1-1.5 gram per pound.
