Title: Please Help! When I was little my older sister Jen was always thinner than i was...and I was always depressed about it. Being thin always came natural to her. My mother never encouraged good health or fitness, she didn't even seem to care. As we got older Jen got a more womanly figure than me, and she became somewhat heavy set. I was for a couple of years, the thiner sister. Jen now eats less and less, and has lost about 30lbs. She is 18 and I am 17. My mother over the years has pit us against each-other, most recently saying things like, "Wow Nicole, look at how thin Jen has become" and "I bet you wish you looked as beautiful and thin as Jen". I realize that this is somewhat immature for an adult and i try not to listen, but I too want to look great in a bathing suit. This has almost become a competition, who can be more healthy and such. I am not so concerned about the competition, but about my health, I am over weight and would really like to become thin. My prom is also fast approaching, and to hear my mother say things like "I am sure they sell nice tents for you to wear" is very upseting. Please help, tips, tricks, anything that works and will help. I have come so close to just giving in and resorting to some kind of eating disorder, but I don't want to. First of all, and forgive me for saying this, but I think your mother sounds horrible. How mean of her to say those kinds of things to her own child. Ignore her if you can, I am sure you are beautiful in your own right! As for being healthy and losing weight, first of all, if you don't exercise, start. Try and do some cardio and resistance training a minimum of 3 times a week. Walk, run, go to a gym, whatever you have access too. Do weights if you have access to them, otherwise do resistance training that uses your own body weight....push ups, crunches, squats, calf raises, etc. Eat good, nutritious whole foods. Cut way back on junk food. Eat whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein like chicken breasts, 1% cottage cheese, egg whites, low fat dairy. Try and cut back as much as possible on foods made with sugar and white flour. Also, drink lots of water, at least 8 glasses a day. Good luck to you.
