Title: Question About Getting Bulky...

i'm naturally a fairly muscular girl, albeit with a coating of fat over my "muscles." i want to tone my arms and legs up and get some muscle definition, but i don't want them getting any bigger than they are now. what types of weights should i be lifting? i talked to a trainer a few weeks ago and he recommended 12 lbs for curls, and 20 for bench, but i still worry this is too much. i'm doing sets of them, not just one, but i don't want to end up looking like ms. olympia. britney spears, perhaps, but not ms. olympia. please help!!

It's difficult to say how much weight is too much given the information you provided. I will always go back to the general principles of using weights for toning -- use just enough weights (normally lower poundage) but work on the reps -- normally from 15 to 18 reps per set. To get bulk, use higher poundage and lower reps. Trust your gym instructor. He probably knows what he's doing. Do three sets per exercise at the high rep rate and that should help with the toning.

    Good luck!....Johnny

If you don't want to build any muscle, why are you doing resistance training?
Stick to cardio and diet to lose bodyfat. High-reps does not tone.

    First off from the women
    that I have knows through
    years of training usually
    they don't get bulky no
    matter how much they lift
    unless they are on steroids
    or something. Your trainer
    gave you some good
    advice. I am suprised you
    don't feel privelaged to have
    those genetics! Your
    Britney spears comment
    caught my attention Britney
is actually a pretty buff chick
have you seen her abs! I
    think that her genetics and
    lots of "dieting" "cardio" and
    major airbrushing help give
her arms that lean look and
her abs that manly look. It's
a false image train and let
    your body develop naturally
the odds it may look like
    your are getting bigger but
it's just tone and thats what
you want if you want that
lean look!! So if this was
any advice to you good luck!

if ur getting bulkier then probably the muscle is building under a layer of fat or fat is trapped between the muscle.....the only way to lose fat is to change to a healthier diet (more veggies, less sugar, more whole wheat bread type stuff instead of white) and excercise.....ive recently(like 2 weeks ago) changed my eating and cut out the mcdonalds but i can still have a chocolate once in a while!! i actually feel that i am feeling less hungry because i am eating more of low-calorie things like vegetables...i used to have pasta or a sandwich @ snack but now ill have some cut up veggies (peppers, carrots, celery...whatever) and u feel more full because u can eat more but it isnt even NEARLY as many calories as the other stuff i was eating....
for all u mcdonalds addicts.....its really not
that hard to give it up...now that i gave it up i realise that i never REALLY liked it that much anyways!!
