Title: Diet Soda-what's The Real Deal Are diet soda's really better for you than the regular thing, and what is the deal with them? Do they really have less calories or fat? Name: Aleksia Date: Oct. 24th, 2001 Title: Re: Diet Soda-what's The Real Deal i heard that soda helps the storing of fat. the carbonation opens up fat cells which makes them store more. so even diet soda has more carbonation. think about it this way- beer has carb and about 160 calories- beer bellies. on the other hand liquer drinks can have a lot of calories but do you ever see anyone with a belly drinking that stuff? i don't but that's only a comparison. so i think soda is bad. waters better. Carbonation simply put has no effect on fat storage or loss. In fact caffiene which is proven to have anti lipogenic effects(aiding fat loss)is better delivered to the blood stream with the added carbon dioxide(the chemical that makes drinks carbonated. Fat is generally put into the cell via insulin threw a storage enzyme called lipoprotien lipase. Diet soda does not activate this enzyme in most cases. The infamous beer gut is cause by the sugar found in beer. That sugar is maltose. It is the highest glycemic sugar there is and also generally causes the largest insulin spike. As for liqour 80 proof and above generally have no carbohydrates, but they do have calories so you got to watch the consumption. Alcohol metabolism is a bit different from other substances. Insulin typacally is not involved. Fat loss does stop though when alcohol is present in the blood. The body will only burn alcohol for feul when it is present. Glucose production in the liver stops when alchohol is present because it is working over time to metabolise the alcohol. So in summary alcohol blunts fat loss, beer encourages fat storage, and diet soda typically will have no effect on fat gain or loss. Although water is the superior choice. -John L.
