Title: Milk I don't know how this question is going to sound, but here goes, i've heard that milk is bad but then i heard it was good, well I know its good for bones but how much milk a day is too much? Name: Micheal Date: Oct. 4th, 2001 Title: Re: Milk Milk is good if you are trying to put on muscle. A good amount of fat, carbs and protein are in every cup. Particulary, most of the protein from milk will be casein. I don't know why you heard milk is bad, but two things I can think of. First, milk contains alot of calcium. Maybe people say too much calcium will be bad for you. However, since you workout the amount of calcium required will be greater since calcium regulates the contractile activity of muscles. Next thing, I have heard that milk is bad for cutting (losing fat). I think the reason was that the sugar contained in milk is bad for this. I believe lactose is a chain of glucose and one chain of galactose. Galactose acts similiar to fructose. So it might cause an insulin spike and it might cause your liver sugar stores to fill up, both might cause fat storage. The reason is that Milk is very insulitrophic which means that the body needs high amounts of insulin to metabolize it. Many milk products Insulin index is up to six fold their glycemic index. Just in case your wondering what the Insulin index is? It's not the same thing as the GI, which measure the rate of absorption of a given carbohydrate. The II actually measure the Insulin response. You can search med line, American Journal of Clinical nutrition to find this research however, so far I've only found a few articles on the topic.
