Title: Excercise - How It Affects Mood

I'm a seventh grader that is conducting a science fair experiment with the topic "How Excercise (or lack of) Affects People's Moods". Please help by answering as many of these questions as you can:
1)Does Excercise affect people's moods at all?
2)How long should people excercise for excercise to affect their moods?
3)Can you excercise for too long of a period?
4)Does a certain type of excercise change a person's mood more than any other?

Thanks so much!

Title: Re: Excercise - How It Affects Mood

    Hi,

1)Does Excercise affect people's moods at all?

Yes. Exercise produces endorphins which are pain inhibitors that tend to make you feel better. When someone uses the term "runner's high" this is usually what they are referring to. It can also make you feel better in other ways including providing a sense of accomplishment, stress relief, and improved self-confidence and self-image.

2)How long should people excercise for excercise to affect their moods?

Usually at least 20 minutes but it can vary to some degree. Email me if you want specifics and I'll dig them up out of my textbooks.

3)Can you excercise for too long of a period?

Yes. There are several things to consider about this. One is your bodies "sugar" stores. See your body has different ways of generating energy used for exercise. The longer you exercise in a one session the more your body tends to burn fat for energy. But there is a saying in exercise physiology that goes "carbohydrates are the fire in which fat burns". Even when you burn fat your body needs some carbohydrates (actually sugar) to to activate the process. When your body is so low on these sugars it can no longer generate energy and then you do something we call "hitting the wall" or "bonking" and it's a really tired feeling. At this point you'd need to restore some of the carbohydrates in your body. So yes, you can exercise too long. If doing exercise like strength training your bodies hormonal levels start to become unfavorable after about an hour. But I wont get into the technicalities of that unless you really want to because its a little more complicated. The shape you are in can also play a part in how long you can exercise.

4)Does a certain type of excercise change a person's mood more than any other?

It varies somewhat from person to person but most people seem to get more of the mood enhancement from aerobic exercise.

Hope that helps. If you need more information or sources for your article feel free to email me and I'll provide you with some. Good luck!
