"Is Pilates or Yoga concidered aerobic?"
They could be if you did them fast enough or hard enough but generally they wouldn't be considered aerobic.
Don't be fooled though. They are still good workouts. Some forms of yoga, such as asthanga yoga (check my spelling) are more physically demanding than others and are a great low impact workout. Good luck.

Yep, what Shane said, but...
Keep in mind that some of the promises you hear from these forms of exercise, especially pilates, are lies. Things like creating "long lean muscles instead of big bulky muscles", or creating "long muscles so you look taller", are all lies.

Kurt makes a good point. Pilates has been around for nearly a century but has been marketed heavily lately. If any Pilates or Yoga instructor, book, or video claims it can make you lose a significant amount of weight in a few weeks or make your muscles long and "tone" don't believe it because it's not possible. Remember the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

I agree that they don't make your body taller but I have been doing yoga for years adn I just started pilates. I think it is all the idea that they really mean to say it is not a bulking up exercise just one that still builds strenghth. But words like "leaner and longer" sound better than "it will make you healthier than you are right now sitting on the couch watching the infomercial, so get up!."

The point me and Shane are trying to make is that they are false advertising. I would bet most people buy these products (like Windsor Pilates) because they believe that they will create "longer and leaner muscle instead of big bulky muscles". This is like most products you see on TV. There are creating false information, mainly based on the ignorance of people that think if they use a weight higher than 5 lbs they will suddendly "bulk" up. Here's an exceprt from a website created by a women who lifts for recreation:
"FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME, YOU CANNOT GET TOO BIG FROM LIFTING WEIGHTS! A NON-DRUG-USING MALE TRAINEE WOULD HAPPILY CRAWL ON HIS LIPS THROUGH A FIELD OF LEECHES TO ADD FIFTEEN CRUMMY LITTLE POUNDS OF MUSCLE A YEAR! DO YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE SOMEHOW SO SPECIAL THAT YOU WILL DEFY THE LAWS OF PHYSIOLOGY AND SUDDENLY BECOME HUGE ONE DAY? WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GODDAMNED TESTOSTERONE, HONEY! WHAT'S THAT? YOU CAN'T? OH, PERHAPS THAT IS BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU BULK UP????" [http://en.stumptuous.com/weights.html]
If this is how a woman with a background in physiology feels, how do you think the men who try their hardest to put on mass feel about this topic? Most have a pretty damn strong opinion on it.
True Pilates and Yoga have their benefits. I am not knocking that exercise form, but people who buy these videos mainly buy them for weight loss. Going to do running will provide better results instead of doing pilates. Doing resistance training will definetly provide better strength gains. But strength is a highly subjective term thrown around these days. So why buy Windsor Pilates?

Kurt wasn't trying to be rude. He was quoting the opinion of a woman's website who is educated on the subject.

Please tell me what was wrong with that post, I would love to hear it.
I know this kind of people, the ones who goto the gym and WASTE EVERYONES TIME. She is wasting my time occupying the weights and the bench using those pink dumbells that will accomplish absolutely FUCK-ALL. Want a physiology lesson? To have an adaption you have to exceed a minimal essential strain. This will include muscle hypertrophy and new bone formation. You you honestly fucking think that doing squats, shoulder press, curls, OR ANYTHING with the pink dumbells will meet this? Absolutely NOT. Stop wasting your time, and more importantly stop wasting the time of everyone at the gym.
OH wait, she doesn't want to bulk up, she wants to tone, right? TONE IS A GIMMICK TERM USED TO SELL PRODUCTS TO MORONS WHO DON'T QUESTION THEM. Why does everyone believe everything they hear in fitness related infomercials, but question everything in other infomercials selling anti-hair loss formulas, or anti-winkle creams, etc. It boggles the mind. Question everything you hear. Question everything you hear from me, from other people on this board, from infomercials, from personal trainers and from doctors. Pick up a fucking book instead of paying 100$ for the lastest watercooler fitness trend.
I am also tried of people giving advice saying that walking and jogging will work different muscle groups and then come and say how easily they "bulk" up. Gimme a fucking break. Pick up a god damn book.
Shane, i'm gone, it is hopeless trying to inform these lost causes. They have been brainwashed with information and have extremely warped personal images.

WOW...what a read...you're all so passionate. That's great, but don't give up on the poor brain-washed general public. Stay calm and keep educating.
One more thing...the Pilates and yoga help with flexibility -- that's the focus I take, not "lean muscles, bulking, yadda yadda yadda..."
I think it's GREAT for improving range of motion and flexibility. Don't you agree? WAIT...you don't have to answer that!
Later.
