Title: Exercise While Being Sick

I recently just came down with what i believe to be the flu. I dont think i should exercise..b/c i think it will make me sicker... what do you think. Im woried about gaining weight, and losing muscle mass and endurance.. what can i do. should i try to do some easy lifting and cardio... should i cut back on my calories while i cant work out... please help

    Unfortunately, being sick isn't a good reason for not continuing to exercise - not unless you have a high fever or are coughing a lot.

    If you have the flu - you will probably cut back on calories anyway - just because high-fat, high-calorie foods aren't as appealing while you're sick. Drink juice, eat lots of veggies, and soup always goes down good. If you feel nauseous - eat a few saltines or a piece of dry toast and drink plenty of water. Take your vitamins!

    I would suggest that you get outside for a nice walk and continue to do your strength training. Just don't over-exert yourself. Do one set of each exercise at your maximum weight. Then follow it up with another nice walk - outside in the fresh air. As long as you can maintain your routine - even when you're sick, the chances of your faltering on your goals will be lower. Try to stay consistent and get your butt up and moving. You'll feel better physically and mentally.

    Oh, yea - and be sure to wear suitable clothing for your outside walk. If you break a sweat and there's a cool breeze outside - you might catch a slight chill. Although cold temperatures don't cause illnesses (germs do), catching a chill still brings your immunity down and can make you more vulnerable.

    And that hot shower afterward also feels so good. It soothes your aches and pains and the steam will help clear out congestion from your sinuses and lungs.
