Many of us have been taking vitamins, on a daily basis, for years. We hope to live healthier lives, live longer and avoid trips to the doctor. These pills vary from multi-vitamins, to vitamin C and fish oils. But, as pressures from society increase, our need to get these vitamins into our system and acting fast have pushed many people to the edge. New ways of taking vitamins have emerged and, along with it, many dangers.
After years of study, it has become clear that crushing vitamins to a powder creates a harmful dust. From prolonged exposure, buildup of vitamin powder can restrict air flow and lead to death, as was the case in May 2001 by a Health-Food-Store worker.
In one severe case, the lung actually absorbed so many vitamins that it became too strong. It forced air out at such a fast pace that the body could not absorb oxygen fast enough and the patient died of carbon dioxide poisoning.
Experts have labeled this problem as VILE (Vitamin Ingestion Lung Expires) and warn that it could be one of the fastest growing problems in America, if left unchecked.
